DUMFRIES, Va. — Officials put shovels into dirt marking the start of construction of Ginn Park in Dumfries.

The new park will sit at 3876 Graham Park Road and will be built in two phases. Phase one will include playground equipment, a basketball court, a playing field, and a gravel parking lot. While it’s unclear when construction of phase two will begin, it is said to include a community center, a community plaza and amphitheater, tennis courts, a community garden, and a paved parking lot.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Katherine Mercurio Gotthardt and Marvin Josaitis, PhD, are autographing their recently published books at the 2nd and Charles Bookstore  in Woodbridge on Shoppers Best Way – 2904 Prince William Parkway this Saturday, June 30, from 1-4 p.m.

Mercurio Gotthardt acclaimed first novel, “Approaching Felonias Park,” is a fast paced and gritty read, exploring intimately the lives of the needy in a world of predatory lending. A gifted writer, Mercurio Gotthardt also will have available her outstanding “Poems from the Battlefield” as well as “Furbily-Furld Takes on the World,” a charming and magical children’s book. Sales of Katherine’s works will benefit local food pantries.

If there’s one thing that I enjoy more than sharing my own Slug Tales, it’s hearing the tales from others who also Slug.

Whether you are a commuter or not, the stories are usually pretty entertaining – and especially as a commuter, I can relate to some of the experiences my fellow Slugs have shared. Often times I’ll check my Facebook account during the morning commute, and every now and then I’ll run across a friend’s post, either complaining about a slow driver or dirty car, or enjoying the driver’s chosen radio station.

FROM POLICE REPORTS:

Rape/Burglary – On June 23 at 5:43 a.m., detectives from the Special Victims Bureau responded to investigate a rape which was reported to have occurred in the 3300 block of Bronson Ct in Woodbridge. The investigation revealed that the victim, a 30 year old female of Woodbridge, was sexually assaulted by the accused, a known acquaintance, when he entered the residence through a secured front door. Following the investigation, the accused was subsequently arrested. The victim was treated at an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

LAKE RIDGE, Va. — The Lake Ridge RidgeRunners are hoping to set a record tonight: to have more people than ever before show up for a run held by their club.

More than 50 people are expected to gather at Lake Ridge Elementary School on Hedges Run Drive at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and is open to anyone – from beginning runners to more experienced athletes.

LORTON, Va. — The brick buildings located on Va. 123 across from the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton was the site of the Occoquan Workhouse, and in 1917 housed suffragettes who were arrested picketing the White House to give women the right to vote. Today it is part of the largest water utility in Virginia, and provides drinking water to 1.7 million customers.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — What was once home to multiple fast-food restaurants at Woodbridge’s Marumsco Plaza is no more.

The building that stood at the southern corner of the plaza at U.S. 1 and East Longview Drive has been demolished. The demolition clears the way for a new Walgreens Pharmacy and a BB&T Bank to be built.

DALE CITY, Va. — Fire forced out the occupants of a home on Hamilton Drive on Sunday.

Crews were called to the 4600 block of Hamilton Drive off Hillendale Road in Dale City at 10:30 a.m. to find the occupants of the house already outside. Crews found the blaze in a bedroom on the house’s main floor, said Prince William fire and rescue spokeswoman Kim Hylander.
