It was a deadly weekend on the roads this Thanksgiving holiday in Virginia where 12 people lost their lives.

State police were out in force Wednesday through Sunday night during the holiday weekend. The number of fatalities rose slightly from the same time in 2011 when 11 people were killed on state roads.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Police and Santa will take some special children shopping and to breakfast this year.

On two Saturday’s next month, Dec. 8 and Dec. 15, the Santa Cops program returns as Prince William police, officers at the county’s Adult Detention Center, Virginia State Police, and police from Manassas, Manassas Park, and Haymarket will treat 100 children to shopping and breakfast.

DUMFRIES, Va. — Police, family, and friends descended on a church today on Va. 234 near Dumfries to mourn the passing and honor the life of an assistant police chief.

Asst. Chief Gerald “Jerry” Tolson passed away from cancer Nov. 19. A college spokeswoman said Tolson recently visited a doctor was informed he had about a week to live.

That’s 3,605 tickets to ride special trains on the commuter railroad’s Fredericksburg and Manassas lines where Santa will be on board Dec. 8.

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — It’s been three weeks since 17-year-old Evan Newsom was shot and killed by police. And during that time no new official details about the shooting have been released.

Newsom was killed at his home in the early hours of Friday Nov. 2 in the 12300 block of Tacketts Mill Road in Fauquier County, just across the Stafford County line.

Republican Delegate Mark Cole of Stafford County doesn’t like the idea of voters using a utility bill or check as an acceptable form of voter identification.

Cole told Fredericksburg.com a new bill he introduced would ban the use of such forms of ID at polls in Virginia.
