STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Dr. Randy Bridges is fairly out and William C. Symons, Jr. is fairly in.

Symons was selected as the interim superintendent for Stafford County Public Schools this week. The selection comes as Bridges announced he would leave the school system to return home to his native North Carolina on July 31.

Several new lane closures are planned this weekend as part of the 95 Express Lanes Project on Interstates 95 and 395 in Northern Virginia.

The closures will impact the entire stretch of HOV lanes from the Washington, D.C. line to Va. 234 in Dumfries, from 11 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Satruday, and then again 11 p.m. Saturday until 10 a.m. Sunday.

MANASSAS, Va. — A Manassas man was arrested Tuesday after taking a shot at another man in broad daylight, police said.

A fight broke out in the 8700 block of Mathis Avenue, near Va. 28 and the parking lot of MVC adult video store, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. During the fight, one suspect pulled out a gun and fired a single shot, missing the victim, said police.

DUMFRIES, Va. — The lights at Councilman Derrick Wood’s house on Seigel Court in Dumfries have been dark as of late.

The elected official says he no longer lives in the house after he made the decision to move out. A renter, his landlord wanted $400 more per month for his family to live there, said Wood. It’s a price he didn’t want to pay.

DUMFRIES, Va. — Volunteers in Dumfries were recognized for their service as a special dinner Monday night.

A handful of area residents from Prince William and Stafford counties were recognized for their selfless service to the town in events like the annual Christmas parade, fall festival, and monthly senior luncheons. Thanks to Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Fairfax, Prince William, all of the volunteers had their names entered into the Congressional Record.

LAKE RIDGE, Va. — Community running group the Lake Ridge RidgeRunners has had a “nebulous existence” since the 1970s, according to their website, but in recent years has seen a surge in membership under the leadership of volunteer president and avid runner, Stephanie Dupal-Demartin.

In addition to weekly runs and walks, the club also hosts a popular “May Day 5K” race, and a yearly “Record Breaking Run and Walk” to encourage people to come out and try the club.

QUANTICO, Va. — The impending furlough of Department of Defense civilians will have an impact on virtually all customer and family services offered aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico.

On May 14, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced the furloughs as a result of the federal budget sequestration that included a $37 billion dollar cut to the DOD budget for the current fiscal year. Letters were sent to civilian employees in late May and early June to inform them of the reduction in work and pay.
