A Stafford County school has received an award from the Virginia Mathematics & Science Coalition (VMSC) for the 2014 Programs that Work Awards. These awards are given to those that work with students in STEM fields, including mathematics, science, technology and engineering.

Katie Gnadt, the recipient of this award from Drew Middle School, was honored by Stafford County Public Schools for her work with her students on a project titled, “A Meaningful Watershed Experience”.

A memorial for Sally Okuly stands at the intersection of Opitz Boulevard and Montgomery Avenue in Woodbridge.

Not made of steel or stone, the monument is simply a teddy bear strapped to a utility pole with a large piece of cardboard with her name, and “in loving memory” written in marker.

Dumfries officials hear a request from North Stafford church now meeting at a hotel.

Grass Roots Christian Fellowship church wants to move its services from a Wingate Inn on Garrisonville Road in Stafford County to a space inside Elwye Building in Dumfries. The Town Council must grant a special use permit to the church to permit them to use the building, which houses commercial business.

Joseph James Woods, 79, of Woodbridge, VA. died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on January 29, 2014.

Joe was born June 27, 1934 to the late Joseph George and Mary R. Woods in Arlington, MA. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars giving 23 years to his country in the U.S. Air Force. During this time, he was appointed to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and was awarded several citations including the Bronze Star for meritorious service. After his military retirement, Joe worked for 23 years as a Supervisor for Northern Virginia Community College. He received an Emeritus Award after retirement from NOVA in 2003. Joe was a loving husband, devoted father, and grandfather. He enjoyed stamp & coin collecting and civil war relic hunting.

Cherished grandfather of 20, great grandfather of 38 and 1great great grandson. Dear brother of Mildred Herndon and Elizabeth Williams. Mr. Pittman was predeceased by his sons Alec Pittman (Late Sharon) and Jeff Pittman (Late Patty), as well as a sister Doris Sears. James was a Navy Veteran of World War II. The family will receive friends at the MOUNTCASTLE TURCH FUNERAL HOME, 4143 Dale Boulevard, Dale City, VA 22193 on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 12 Noon. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery with Navy Honors at 1:30 PM.
