STAFFORD COUNTY — Despite the cancellation of other Civil War history events in our area, Stafford County will hold theirs as planned.

The annual Yankees in Falmouth event scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9 and Sunday, Sept. 10 will feature re-enactors dressed in period clothing, a blacksmith, artillery, and cannon fire demonstrations.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — A new school speed zone could be coming to the one-year-old Charles Colgan Sr. High School.

County officials in public documents state there have been multiple requests for a 35 mph zone in front of the school located on Route 234, near Hoadly Road at Independent Hill. A public hearing on the matter is scheduled tomorrow, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Prince William County Board of Supervisors meeting at the Prince William County Government Center in Woodbridge.

James Calvin Slaughter, age 77, of Woodbridge, VA, formerly of Midland, VA departed this life on Monday, August 28, 2017 at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. He was the loving father of Tami Slaughter O’Hara and Nicole Slaughter Boissière (Said). He is also survived by four brothers; Wayne, Gilbert (Ann), Harrison (Gudrun), and Edward (Wynettia), three sisters; Virginia Cox (DeLacy), Lillian Banks (Herman), and Gale Farmer (Jerome), three grandchildren; Nicholas and Taylor O’Hara and Sydney Boissière, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. James was preceded in death by his lovely wife Vera Yvonne, his parents James and Fannie Slaughter, and his siblings Madeline, Godfrey, Judson, and John. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Greater Little Zion Baptist Church, 10185 Zion Drive, Fairfax, VA 22032. The viewing will be at 10:00 a.m. and the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Memorial Park, Annandale, VA. Arrangements entrusted to Ames Funeral Home of Manassas, VA. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the American Heart Association in memory of James C. Slaughter.

DUMFRIES — Police are asking anyone with information on the crash that killed an Amtrak engineer to come forward.

James Henry Taylor IV, 47, of Fredericksburg, died after he was struck by a dark-colored sedan at mile post 152 on Interstate 95 in Dumfries.

DUMFRIES — Pastor William Thompson was in the hospital on Sunday, and it was his wife, Etta who came to church about 9:30 a.m. to open the building for Sunday school.

“I just walked up and there they were,” Etta said. “I just started shaking.”

MANASSAS — This past weekend’s canceled Civil War Weekend was a missed opportunity for business owners, residents and history buffs.

The annual event draws re-enactors and tourists for a series of events including a parade, and social dance. The city canceled the event in light of a protest in Charlottesville where one woman was killed by a white nationalist who is accused of driving his car into a crowd of counter protesters on the street.
