OCCOQUAN, Va. — More than 80 people on Sunday will see Prince William County’s four towns from the seat of their bicycle.
The first-ever “Tour of the Towns — Tour of Prince William” organized by Occoquan Mayor Earnie Porta has closed it’s registration books, and the response to the idea of touring the country by bike has caught on.
Ralph Lawrence Wilcher, 56, of Stafford County passed away Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Ft. Belvoir Community Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Kathrine Wilcher; sons Christopher and Timothy Wilcher; daughter Bethany Anderson (Nathan); mother Matilda McCray; brother Steven Wilcher; sisters Janice Shumaker and Patsy Quinn; and brother-in-law William Marino (Judy).

Thomas E. Newman, 91, passed on Tuesday July 16, 2013 at his home in Front Royal VA. He was born December 1, 1921 to Richard and Annie Gertrude Newman. He worked as groundskeeper/gardener for 32 years for the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) until his retirement on Jan. 28, 1983.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gertrude E. Newman; and 8 Children: Deceased daughter Bonnie(Donald) Edwards, Pauline(Maurice) Scott, David(Barbara) Newman, Joan(Ronnie) Caison, Tracy Hamilton, Timmy Hamilton, Rodney Cotton and Robert Barbour; 11 Grandchildren: Greg(Adrienne) Edwards, Lisa Edwards, Rev. Evan Newman(Joie), Danny(Nikki) Scott, Candice and Andrea Newman, Ryan Caison, Corey Hamilton, Latoya(Kyrie) Norris, Tatiana and Timothy Hamilton, and 8 great grandchildren.
Debra E. Acevedo, 64, died July 13, 2013 at her Stafford home.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Andre; mother, Mary Kee; brother, Phillip Kee; sisters, Sandra Hutchison and Pamela Jimenez and grandson, Jason Andre.
DARLENE JEAN MYERS, age 79 of Haymarket, Virginia passed away Friday, July 19, 2013 at Novant Medical Center Prince William.
Darlene was born July 3, 1934 in Tripp, South Dakota daughter of the late Ida Eisenbraun. She was a 1952 graduate of Washington High School, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and attended The University of Colorado and The University of Hawaii. Darlene was a 1976 graduate of Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College and became a Licensed Realtor in Virginia in 1984 and was the founding president, Regency Women’s Club, 2005-2007, 2009. She participated in Regency activities (in addition to Regency Women’s Club), Chorus, Regionetts and Regency players and enjoyed the charity work she did for her community.
Retired Lt. Colonel Elijah “Hank” Girven Jr. died Wednesday morning, July 17, 2013 in Upper Marlboro, Maryland at age 87. He was born May 18, 1926 in Bristow, Oklahoma to parents Dr. Elijah Henry Girven and Eva Mae (Venters) Girven. Girven was predeceased by his wife, Queen Elizabeth Girven.
After graduating high school in May 1944 as class valedictorian, Girven attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. In the summer of 1945, he was drafted and began his one year tour of duty in the U.S. Navy. Once completed, he was released from active duty. He transferred briefly to Iowa State College before settling at North Carolina A&T State College in 1947. In 1951, he graduated with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering and was also called by the Army for active duty.
