Kathleen Gaarde, 62, lived near the Prince William County Government Center and worked at Washington’s Navy Yard. She was one of 13 victims who died in Monday’s massacre shot and killed at the Navy’s nerve center complex.

Lillian T. Knight, 94, of Stafford County, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013 at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mrs. Knight was a member of Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church. She had retired as clerk of the circuit court for Stafford and volunteered with the Stafford Volunteer Fire Dept. Ladies Auxilliary and the Stafford Volunteer Rescue Squad Ladies Auxilliary.
Michael F. Zito, age 98 of Woodbridge, VA formerly of New Haven, Connecticut passed away on Monday, September 9, 2013 at his daughter’s home where he had lived for eighteen years.
He was born to Italian immigrant parents, the late Francesco and Chiara Zito, on April 2, 1915 in New Haven, Connecticut. One of the “Last Great Generation,” he was a WWII Veteran who was a private in the US Army Infantry and fought three years in Italy until he was wounded and subsequently honorably discharged. He then worked 39 years as a machinist for the Winchester Arms Company in New Haven and retired in 1979.
Paul H. Lake, 60, of Woodbridge, VA passed away at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center on September 12, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Goldie Lake; his sister, Ginny; and his brother, Billy.
Meada F. Pearson, 81 of Woodbridge, passed away on September 13, 2013 at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.
She is preceded in death by her previous husbands, Gene Gerard, and Ashton Shifflett; sisters, Iva Lohr, Amanda Graham, Georgia Fair, and Annie Eckard; brothers, Sam Eckard, Paul Echkard, and Darlow Eckard. She is survived by her husband, Robert Pearson; her children, Nancy Cornwell (Denny), Mary Lou Thompson (Danny), Bubby Shifflett (Rita), Doris Shifflett, and Betty Passman; step-children, Robert Pearson (Wendy), Brian Pearson, and Cindy Pearson; 16 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Mary Lohr.
Edward Michael Elder was born on May 18, 1988 and passed away on September 15, 2013.
He was loved and will be missed by not only his family but his friends. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road Woodbridge, VA 22191.
