If you tune into BET to see Kelly Rowland’s new show, Chasing Destiny, chances are that you may recognize a face.
Mayah Dyson, 19, is competing on Chasing Destiny as a vocalist amongst other talented, young female singers. The aim of Chasing Destiny is to find the next big female music group, and Mayah is currently on her way to compete for a spot in that group. She made it past the preliminary rounds, landing her a spot on the show.
Dyson says that she found out about Chasing Destiny through one of her friends through a screenshot that was on the Berklee alumni page. She didn’t take it seriously at first because she had no idea what it was — however, she sent in her audition videos and the rest is history. BET contacted Dyson expressing a firm interest, and then asked her to send in a call back audition video.
From there, they flew her out to Los Angeles.
“Being on Chasing Destiny was such a life changing, eye opening, and unforgettable experience. Kelly was the one person who saw something in me and really believed in what I could offer to this world with my music and my voice. I met so many influential people who taught me the recipe for pure stardom,” Dyson said.
Dyson was born and raised in Manassas and is a proud graduate from Philip Michael Pennington Traditional School and Forest Park High School. She is currently a sophomore at Berklee College of Music located in Boston, Massachusetts.
“I knew I wanted to go to Berklee at a young age. I heard about the school when I was 13 years old. I worked until I was 18 to get into the school. I do not remember my life without music because my craft makes me the passionate person I am today. My whole life I have used music as an escape route to flee from the chaos of the world,” Dyson said.
Dyson discovered her interest in a career in music at a young age with her aunt serving as a huge inspiration to her. From there, Mayah began singing within the community at a young age, most commonly at her local church. At Berklee, Mayah is a Music Business Major. Her decisions to major in business revolve around her passions for the business and her belief of being well-rounded within music.
“I want to learn the ins and outs of the industry. Many people tell me that I do not need to major in music to pursue a career in the arts but, I strongly disagree. I believe education is important for doctors just as important as it for artist. We as students are the future and should be elite with any career path we wish to pursue. Berklee has helped me learn more about myself and is helping me to push myself as an artist.,” Dyson said.
