On Saturday, February 7, 2015, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Prince William County Chapter Inc., in collaboration with the Society of Women Engineers hosted a very productive workshop entitled, “Girls Go To Techbridge”.
The purpose of the event was to inspire and expose young girls’ grades sixth through eighth to STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This was an awesome event for our girls.
During the event the girls had an opportunity to meet various volunteer engineers from all over the DC, VA and Baltimore region. The ac- tivities were non-stop, engaging, and creative.
One activity entitled Wind- Power Crank, challenged the girls to build a wind powered crank to transport food from low level ground to high level ground. Another activity entitled Clean Water, taught the girls how to use different elements such as sand, gravel, and fabrics to filter dirty water to make clean drinking water. The creative thing about all the activities is that the girls learned about different Engineering careers by having a hands on experi- ence taught by skilled Engineers.
Additional activities included Give Me Shelter, Car to Rescue and Tune in Techbridge. By the end of the day, the young ladies were very knowledgeable and several said that they would like to be an engineer. Words cannot express our sincere appreciation to the women of SWE. It was an all-day event that took place at Potomac Middle School and included fifty participating girls from various middle schools in Prince William County.
The schools in attendance were Potomac, Graham Park, and Saunders Middle Schools. We also appreciate the coalition sisters who supported this event. Well done the ladies of NCBW-PWCC!
