Attorneys are missing several key pieces of evidence, and that triggered a delay in the arraignment of 22-year-old John Nathaniel Sherwood.
Sherwood is charged in the murder of his 21-year-old wife Erica Renae Sherwood, of Triangle. She was killed during the early morning hours of New Year’s Day and leaves behind two children.
An autopsy examination of the victim, as well as other evidence, has not yet been released by a county crime lab, according to a prosecutor in the case.
Sherwood’s attorney Jennifer Zary said her client did not have a statement at this time.
Sherwood is now expected to appear in court at 9 a.m. April 2.
Police said Sherwood visited the victim’s home in the 15100 block of Concord Drive in Dale City about 1:30 a.m. Jan. 1. An argument ensued, and Sherwood was seen chasing the victim inside of her home where he stabbed her multiple times, according to police.
Sherwood fled the scene in a car and was later stopped by a Virginia State Police trooper near a rest area on Interstate 95 at Dale City. Sherwood got out of the vehicle and took off running into the woods but was later apprehended with the use of K-9 units and a police helicopter.
Sherwood is being inside the Prince William County Adult Detention Center under no bond. The death of Erica Renae Sherwood is the first reported murder in Prince William County in 2015.
