Leadership Prince William is “walking the walk” of leadership in our community.
Earlier this week, the Class of 2013 hosted a Labor Day Spectacular for residents, staff and volunteers at the SERVE emergency shelter in Manassas. The event included a free picnic lunch, carnival and video games, face painting, bingo, music, prizes and more.
Sheyna Burt, a graduate of Leadership Prince William and President of The Law Office of Sheyna Nicole Burt, was one of the event coordinators. “I am desperately proud of what our Leadership Prince William class and friends were able to put together in a month,” she said. “From the giggly children, to the adults discussing what they intend to wear when they see (the local production of) Dancing in the Wings, to the awesome buffet, the day was an unmitigated success.”
Brad Marshall, a Leadership Prince William alumnus and an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, proposed the event after learning that no other special activities were planned at the SERVE shelter on Labor Day, “What began as an idea to have a barbecue turned into an all-out carnival! And it wasn’t only a special event for the residents, but for the volunteers and donors as well. It was especially gratifying to see the children of our class members helping the community. One resident came up to a volunteer and simply said ‘Thank you for making us feel special.’”
Brad said he hopes the Labor Day event is the beginning of many community service projects for Leadership Prince William. “We need to walk the walk, not just talk the talk,” he added.
SERVE is the Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Family Service (https://www.nvfs.org/serve), assisting individuals and families in Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park. Its many programs and services include the recently expanded 92-bed emergency shelter and Prince William County’s largest food distribution center.
Leadership Prince William’s mission is to develop, inspire and connect community leaders. Nearly 200 adults have graduated from the program and a new 35-member class will begin the program in late September.
