NOON WEDNESDAY UPDATE
Police identified the second victim in a series of two separate fatal crashes on I-95 in Dale City as a Stafford man.
Kevin L. Mullins, 36, of Stafford, was killed at 7:47 a.m. when he was behind the wheel of a Econoline Van that slammed into the back of a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup. The force of that collision pushed the pickup into the rear of a Kia sedan, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. Both the pickup and sedan had already stopped prior to the impact because of heavy traffic conditions on I-95.
Mullins died at the scene, and police said he was not wearing a seatbelt and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The case is still under investigation.
TUESDAY NIGHT UPDATE
The driver of a van involved in a Monday morning crash that killed one and injured two others is charged with reckless driving.
The 2006 Ford Econoline van, carrying nine passengers from Gaithersburg, Md. to Richmond on Interstate 95, crashed about 4:30 a.m. just south of Dale Boulevard. The driver lost control of the van when it ran off the side of the highway, hit a guardrail and overturned two times coming to rest on its side, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.
Three passengers were ejected from the van, when 43-year-old Marciso A. Campos, of Alexandria, was killed instantly. Another two who were injured were taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, while the remaining occupants of the van were treated at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge.
The driver, 28-year-old J. Diaz-Lemus, of Gaithersburg is charged with reckless driving, said Geller. Police said he was wearing a seatbelt but was traveling too fast for road conditions at the time, when road surfaces were wet.
Police have still yet to release information on the victim of a separate crash that happened about 7:45 a.m. on the northbound side of I-95 that took the life of an unidentified occupant of a vehicle involved in the crash.
