STAFFORD COUNTY — A tractor-trailer overturned at the intersection of Route 1 and Layhill Road.
About 100 gallons of diesel spilled from the truck into the nearby Claiborne Run, causing a major HAZMAT situation in the area, Stafford fire and rescue Chief Joseph Cardello. State authorities have been called in to help Stafford County crews with the clean up that is expected to take five to six hours.
Cardello said his crews are monitoring the skies for possible severe thunderstorms that could delay the cleanup.
The driver was taken to Mary Washington Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
The crash occurred at 3:55 p.m. after the truck, headed south on Route 1 clipped some overhead powerlines and then overturned into a wooded area on the side of the road. The driver of the overturned truck had escaped the vehicle by the time rescue crews had arrived.
“Avoid Route 1 for now,” said Cardello.
