State trooper injured in I-66 crash while assisting at earlier accident

A Virginia State Police trooper was injured early Thursday morning, November 21, while assisting at a crash scene on Interstate 66 eastbound near the Capital Beltway.

The incident occurred around 6:40 a.m., when the trooper, who was inside his patrol car with emergency lights activated, was struck by a Lexus SUV in the right lane of the I-66 Express Lanes. At the time, he was responding to a previous crash involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle that was blocking lanes in both the mainline and Express Lanes.

The trooper suffered minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver and a passenger in the Lexus were also taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

State Police say charges are pending, and both crashes remain under investigation.
