VRE riders to see increased service — if they ever return

Virginia is one step closer to expanding its public rail network in the state, and Virginia Railway Express commuters will benefit.

Gov. Ralph Northam joined the U.S. Transportation Pete Buttigieg, or "Mayor Pete" as attendees of today's press conference continues to refer to him, to announce a deal between the federal and state governments and CSX Railroad to build a nearly $2 billion rail bridge over the Potomac River, linking Arlington with Washington, D.C.

The existing bridge is a bottleneck for trains along the east coast, where multiple tracks narrow to two. CSX owns the railway,  so its freight trains are given priority access to the bridge, often causing delays for Amtrak and VRE trains. The new bridge span will carry only passenger and commuter rail traffic.
