Ribbon cutting for Jenkins Elementary School planned

LAKE RIDGE — A ribbon-cutting is planned for the new John D. Jenkins Elementary School.

The building is located off Prince William Parkway near the Chinn Regional Library in Lake Ridge.

School and county officials will cut the ribbon for the new facility at 6 p.m Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2019. The school is slated to open to students on the first day of school, Monday, August 26.

It’s named for the late Prince William Board of County Supervisors member John D. Jenkins, who served as the Neabsco District Supervisor (Dale City) from 1982 until his death earlier this year. He was the county’s longest sitting supervisor.

He is survived by his wife, Earnestine, who is scheduled to be at the ribbon-cutting. She will have a reading room named in her honor.

The nearly $33 million elementary school building sits on property acquired by the Prince William Board of County Supervisors in 2017 for $7 million. It is one of the few school sites in the county not gifted to the school division as part of a larger housing development.
