Dr. Curtis Craig Shockley died at his home July 1, 2019. He was born in Aldie, Loudoun County December 11, 1936, the only child of the late Craig Curtis Shockley and Audrey Gertrude Poland Shockley. He was a 1955 graduate of Loudoun County High School where he played center on the undefeated football team. He was a very bright student, voted best all-around by his Senior Class. Curtis was quoted in his high school yearbook, “A man’s fortunes are the fruit of his character” – – very prescient for him. He was a Jefferson Scholar at UVA, transferring after three years of study in Biology to the Southern School of Optometry in Memphis, TN where he acquired a Doctor of Optometry degree. He returned to Virginia, eventually setting up an Optometric practice in Manassas he operated until he retired in 2001.
He was an avid outdoorsman – – fishing and hunting – – and enjoyed trips to Russia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Australia, Africa, Alaska, Idaho, Montana and other US states in pursuit of fish and game he could kill and have mounted to put on his walls at home. He was a die-hard Redskins fan, attending many home games and the 1984 Super Bowl game in Tampa. He had a very outgoing personality, was always the life of the party, and enjoyed hosting Summer parties at Quail Ridge Lake and Winter deer roasts at his hunt club.
He was pre-deceased by his wife, Nancy Lee Griffith Shockley in 2003. He is survived by three daughters, Brenda Shockley Batschelet (C.E.) of Manteo, NC, Wendy Shockley Hunter (Jerry) of Great Falls, VA, and Cindy Louise Shockley of Locust Grove, VA; nine grandchildren, Hannah Davenport Magee, Harvey Hatcher Shiflet V, Hope Catherine Shiflet, Paula Elizabeth Hunter, Craig Shockley Hunter, Jacob Solomon Hunter, Suzannah Lee Powell, Virginia Sally McCartney, and Mikey Andrello; two great-grandchildren, Avery Magee and Bennett Magee.
