Suspect charged with reckless handling of a firearm after dispute

STAFFORD — (Press Release) A suspect was arrested by deputies with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office in the early hours of Saturday morning for reckless handling of a firearm.

On December 15, 2018, Deputies Potter and Kellam responded to a reported domestic incident with a weapon on the 100 block of Colebrook Road. Several callers reported hearing shots fired in the area.

Upon arrival, the deputies observed the suspect exiting the basement level of the residence. He was detained and identified as Daren Wonsey, 25, of Fredericksburg. Wonsey told deputies that he had been involved in a verbal altercation with two family members.

A family member told deputies that Wonsey became irate after a verbal argument, prompting him to retrieve two firearms and exit the residence. He then shot several rounds in the backyard. The suspect confirmed that he shot several rounds into his outdoor cooking grill following the argument.

Wonsey was taken into custody and incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail. He is charged with reckless handling of a firearm.
