Stafford Armed Services Memorial Fund grows

STAFFORD, Va. — A donation to the Stafford Armed Services Memorial Fund puts the effort to build a structure to honor fallen service members from Stafford County a bit closer to construction.

Stafford County celebrated a milestone Tuesday with the announcement of a $50,000 gift from the Russell G. Sullivan Estate to the . The gift boosts the County’s fundraising goal and allows design and construction to begin. The donation will sponsor the granite globe component of the memorial. Russell Sullivan was a native Staffordian who was a Navy veteran of WWII. After the war, he played professional baseball for the Detroit Tigers. Then he came back to Stafford and started a successful career as a builder. He was very generous with both his resources and time in the community. The groundbreaking for the memorial is scheduled to take place on March 4, 2017, and the ribbon cutting is set for July 15, 2016.
