We sent Drakes and all candidates running for office in Occoquan for the General Election a survey as part of our annual Project: Election coverage. Here are Drakes’ responses:
PL: Why should Occoquan residents be excited to vote for you?
Drakes: It is an exciting time to be living in Occoquan, with the new River Mill Park, kayak ramp, bustling historic business district and enjoyable restaurants throughout the town and waterfront. I have been charmed by this town since my arrival and have volunteered on several committees leading up to my first term as a Council Member in 2014. My positions have been balanced to be both fiscally responsible and responsive to the community needs. As I look toward a 2nd term on Council, I am a strong advocate of continuing to enhance the Occoquan quality of life and celebrate the historical and cultural significance that embodies the town.
PL: In your own words, what is the job description of a Town Council member? What expertise will you bring to the position?
Drakes: The job of a Town Council Member is to listen and understand the community’s needs, develop solutions to those needs in accord with the best use of available resources, and oversee the execution of a responsive town government. I have served on Town Council for the past two years. Prior to that, I served on the Planning Commission which is responsible for developing the Occoquan Comprehensive Plan. During my tenure on Council, I have participated in the detailed budget process, advocated for public safety, and worked to make Occoquan a more inviting and walkable Community.
PL: What are the biggest issues and needs residents of the Town of Occoquan? What will you do to address those needs?
Drakes: One of the biggest issues we face in Occoquan is manageable growth in light of our unique combination of a desirable location and a small town experience. I am an advocate of businesses that serve the community’s needs, and encourage utilization of our River assets, such as the new River Mill Park.
PL: Have you ever made any mistakes in your public life? How have they affected you?
Drakes: Because of my busy work schedule, I didn’t believe I had time to devote to public service. Living in Occoquan has shown me that everyone has something to offer to their community. As a result, I have benefited greatly from participating and volunteering in community groups, programs and service.
PL: Do you feel that the average citizen is well informed and understands the workings of town government? If not, how do you intend on improving communication with your constituency?
Drakes: Communication is a vital link between citizens and their government, and we must always work to improve it. For example, we have been updating the Town’s digital presence with improvements to the Town’s web site, including the official link to the Occoquan Craft Show as well as its presence on social media: www.OccoquanVa.gov and www.facebook.com/occoquancraftshow
