Jesus is risen! That statement is the cornerstone of the Christian faith.
It’s the reason Christians celebrate Easter. Many people celebrate Easter with chocolate bunnies and brightly-colored Easter eggs, but those aren’t the reason for Easter. Eggs and bunnies symbolize springtime, and new lifeâbut they’re just the signposts pointing to the actual historical events we celebrate.
What Easter celebrates is the most astounding, earth-shaking, turn-the-world-upside-down event in human historyâthe fact that Jesus Christ, the son of God, came to live among us as a fully human person.
He lived in the Middle East a little over 2,000 years ago. He spent his short adult life as an itinerant teacher. He was executed by soldiers of the Roman Empire. He died and was buried in a tomb. Three days later, he was resurrected from the dead! Jesus’ resurrection has spiritual and practical implications for everyone.
The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus ushered in a whole new paradigmâa possibility for hope, peace, love and joy in the face of even the worst pain and suffering. In Jesus’ new world, even death has lost its power. Through Jesus’ resurrection, God is putting the whole world to rights. Anyone who believes Jesus and decides to follow Him has this new, hope-filled life available to them. Anyone!
And for the practical side of things, we leave it to scholar NT Wright, who says it best:
“Easter . . . Â ought to be a time to take something up, some new task or venture, something wholesome and fruitful and outgoing and self-giving. You may be able to do it only for six weeks, just as you may be able to go without beer or tobacco only for the six weeks of Lent. But if you really make a start on it, it might give you a sniff of new possibilities, new hopes, new ventures you never dreamed of. It might bring something of Easter into your innermost life. It might help you wake up in a whole new way. And thatâs what Easter is all about.â
