1 Million Cups Prince William turns 2 with talk about ‘failure’

“Failure” panel discussion scheduled Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016

1 Million Cups — the group that brings an entrepreneurs to the stage each week to help them solve their challenge questions — turns two this week.

Based on the notion that entrepreneurs network and discover solutions over a million cups of coffee, the all-volunteer group of about 25 to 30 entrepreneurs meet each week at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas at 8:30 a.m. each Wednesday. They drink coffee, network, and swap ideas.

At 9 a.m., entrepreneurs are invited to the front of the Lovey Hammel Lounge to share their story of what catapulted them into the stressful, sometimes scary, hopefully rewarding, and always educational world of entrepreneurialism.

Over the past two years, the group has heard from gluten-free bakers, software developers making tools for business, hardware makers on a mission to help the blind see, and music store owners turned worldwide clothing sellers looking to grow it business even larger.

All are local business owners, and all o posed questions about how to solve issues about fixing finances, hiring better employees, and marketing their services to the community. Audience members over the course of an hour listen to the presenter, and then raise thier hands to help answer the business owner’s challenge questions.

The weekly event is free to attend. The best part — the coffee is provided.

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1 Million Cups Prince William will mark its two-year anniversary with a special panel on failure.

Every successful person has encountered failure at some point in business. How they’ve learned from failure and moved ahead accounts for a big part of their success. Let’s talk about the FAIL at this week’s session.

Joining the group for the panel is Kisha Sogunro, owner of Upscale Seconds consignment shop in Haymarket, and Rod Loges, owner of One Degree Capital in Occoquan. Potomac Local owner and 1 Million Cups Prince William co-founder Uriah Kiser will moderate the discussion.

Also invited are all of the 1 Million Cups past presenters who have shared their business plans, their ideas and challenges for review and comment by members of the group. The goal each week is to have entrepreneurs walk away feeling educated and reinvigorated to back into their businesses to succeed.

Founded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, 1 Million Cups is a national organization that meets each Wednesday in cities across the U.S.
