Mass casualty unit used to provide oxygen to patients
A fire this morning at a nursing home in Stafford County caused an evacuation of the building.
Rescue crews were initially called at 8:18 a.m. to the Woodmont Nursing Home at 11 Dairy Lane in Stafford County, near Fredericksburg, for a medical emergency. But when crews arrived they learned of a fire in wing of the building different from the one where the initial medical emergency was reported, said Stafford fire and rescue spokesman Mark Doyle.
A fire and rescue officer went to investigate and found a small fire in a patient room inside the facility, and ordered an evacuation for the affected wing of the building, said Doyle. The fire was quickly extinguished, but five people were taken to a hospital, including the patient for whom rescue crews were initially called to the scene. Information about their conditions was not provided.
Doyle said a mass casualty support unit was used to provide oxygen for the displaced patients of the nursing home. The cause of the fire is being investigated. It caused $1,000 in damage, said Doyle.
