Firefighter Falls on Stairs in Blaze

2 p.m. Wednesday

Fire officials said a blaze that engulfed the basement of a home on Stephens Street in the Independent Hill area of Prince William County did $50,000 in damage.

The occupants of the home were at work just before noon Tuesday when fire broke out. A neighbor called 911, and when crews arrived they say smoke billowing from the front door, according to fire officials.

The fire was quickly knocked down, but not before a firefighter fell after the portion of a staircases collapsed. No serious injuries were reported, however.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The occupants of the home are now staying with friends, officials said in the press release.
