Update 11:30 p.m.
LAKE RIDGE, Va. — The report of a man missing inside a house during a two-alarm blaze sent fire crews racing into the house in a frantic search to find him.
But when that man came running around the side of the house from the backyard wearing only his boxers, sources tell Potomac Local News the firefighters’ search was all for nothing.
When the blaze broke out at a three story town home on Madeira Court in Lake Ridge about 8:20 p.m., first arriving fire and rescue units reported someone who lived inside the house was missing. Sources said when that man showed up in the front yard wearing only boxer shorts, emergency crews saw that he was badly burned, and added he was not in the house at the same time crews were attempting a rescue.
The unidentified, injured man was flown to an area hospital. The victim is said to live at the fire-damaged home, and a total of two occupants inside the home and a family who lives next door are reported displaced.
The Red Cross was on scene to take in the fire victims and provide shelter from a cold March night.
With the front windows of the home completely blown out, fire damaged all three levels of the home. It ripped through the roof, and left interior walls and exterior siding charred.
A swarm of firefighters moved in and out of the end unit town home after the blaze had been doused and the rehab process began. The Prince William County Fire Marshall’s Office was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the blaze, which has not yet been released.
