Time Change to Impact Transit

Daylight-saving time begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday which means changes to schedules around the region – including Metro rail.

Clocks will move ahead one hour at 2 a.m. and the transit system that ferries riders between Virginia and Washington will close earlier.

According to the transit system, those who ride the system Saturday night should plan to catch the last train out of the station one hour earlier than normal.

The time switch comes as fire officials in Stafford County urge residents to check their smoke detectors at the same time they set clocks forward. Many smoke alarms are battery powered and should be checked to see if they are in working order at least twice per year.

“If the smoke alarm is powered by battery, it runs on either a disposable nine-volt battery or a non-replaceable 10-year lithium “long-life” battery,” said Stafford fire and rescue spokesman Mark Doyle. “A backup battery is usually present on hardwired alarms and may need to be replaced. These batteries must be tested on a regular basis and, in most cases, should be replaced at least once each year (except for lithium batteries).”

Residents who have smoke alarms with dead or missing batteries should consider their homes as having no smoke alarms at all, added Doyle.
