The Prince William County Public Schools Central Registration and World Languages Center began their 2011 series of educational workshops for Limited English Proficient (LEP) parents and students.
The first workshop of the year, “Everything You Need to Know About the Schools and Recreation Programs in Prince William County,” was held Jan. 25 at the Ann Ludwig Center in Woodbridge.
These workshops support the mission of the school system’s Office of Student Learning and Professional Development, under which Central Registration falls.
“We clearly met a need with this workshop. The room was filled to near capacity with parents and children and the workshop went over the time set aside in order to answer all parents’ questions. Some even stayed afterwards to talk about specific items,” said Margery Connolly, ESL assessment specialist.
The first segment of the program featured Matt Ragan, a coach, referee, and referee assignor for the Northern Virginia Soccer Club. Ragan provided families with detailed information on how parents and their children can participate in youth and adult soccer leagues, referee training, and coaching programs in Prince William County.
Central Registration staff also provided information on Prince William County Park Authority activities and their various locations throughout the county.
The second segment, “Everything You Need to Know About Prince William County Schools,” was presented by Central Registration staff members. Those who attended the seminar were educated on public school systems in the United States, and PWCS policies and procedures as it relates to attendance, the school calendar, and inclement weather.
The audience at the workshop represented many of the 120 languages and cultures in PWCS.
