Lorton, Va. –– What was billed as overnight road work on Interstate 95 on Tuesday night has been postponed until Wednesday.
Crews will close the ramp from I-95 south to U.S. 1 south (at mile post 161 in Lorton) from 10 p.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday.
The ramp from the from the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes to U.S. 1 south will also be closed during those hours, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The work was put off because of anticipated icy conditions overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.
The detour is part of the I-95 widening project that when finished will have widened the highway to eight lanes between the Occoquan River and Fairfax County Parkway (Va. 7100).
Here’s a look at the detour VDOT has set up for drivers to get around the closures:
Motorists on I-95 south headed to Route 1 south will be detoured to the Prince William Parkway exit (Exit 158B), then follow signs back to I-95 north to Route 123 east (Exit 160) to Route 1. Motorists on the HOV lanes headed to Route 1 south will take the exit to Route 123, then turn left at the traffic signal on Route 123 to Route 1. The HOV reversible lanes will remain open in the southbound direction until 3 a.m. during this work.
The right lane on I-95 north will also close from 10 p.m. By 5 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, the Route 1 ramp and the northbound travel lane will be open.
