When Virginia’s 2011 General Assembly session began Wednesday in Richmond, state legislators got a somber reminder about the shooting of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
A letter from the state capitol’s Chief of Police, Kimberly S. Lettner, stated legislators should be mindful of their surroundings when in Richmond and to always report suspicious activity if they see it.
She made no mention of any specific threat in the letter.
The warning comes after six people, including a 9-year-old girl and a federal judge, were shot and killed on Saturday in Tucson.
All were attending an event for congresswoman Giffords, who herself was shot in the head but has managed to show signs of recovery while being treated at intensive care unit at an Arizona hospital.
