Temperatures on Friday could feel like they’re in the triple digits.

In addition to being a danger to those who are outside, it can also damage the roads you drive on.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory that takes effect at noon and lasts until 9 p.m. for counties along Interstate 95 in Northern Virginia.

A combination of heat and humidity will push temperatures up into the high 90s, but it will feel like 105 degrees for most of the afternoon, stated the weather service.

The high temperatures also put road surfaces at risk of buckling, forcing transportation officials to warn drivers, especially motorcyclists, to beware.

“Pavement expands in the heat and cannot contract if it does not cool down enough overnight,” said Virginia Department of Transportation maintenance manager Albert Rollins. “It continues to expand, and that’s when we see damage.”

Crews were out yesterday repairing damage to buckled pavement on Interstate 395, near Seminary Road in Alexandria. They will be out this weekend conducting similar repairs if needed.

Drivers are asked to pack their patients if confronted with a work zone.

The hot weather will stick around trough the weekend with temperatures in the 90s. A shower is possible Saturday night to cool things off just a bit, but the heat returns Sunday, according to the forecast.

A little bit of relief could come Monday as temperatures are only expected to climb into the low 90s.
