STAFFORD, Va. — Next week, work will begin to improve the quality of the ride for motorists on Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg region by paving multiple segments of northbound and southbound I-95 in Caroline, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.

Collectively, 63 individual lane miles of I-95 will be milled and paved in the Fredericksburg region this year. Milling and paving eliminates persistent potholes, ruts and cracking, and establishes a new, smooth surface for driving that can withstand the persistent high volume and heavy weight of interstate traffic.

NORTH STAFFORD, Va. — The plans have been on the books for years. Now officials want your input on widening a nearly three-mile stretch of U.S. 1 between North Stafford and Triangle.

A public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 10, at Hilldrup Moving and Storage in North Stafford, right where the eventual construction would take place, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Federal Highway Administration as well as local officials are expected to make a presentation at 7 p.m. outlining a preliminary engineering and design project to widen the four-lane highway between Fuller/Joplin roads in Triangle to Boswell’s Corner in North Stafford.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — The private developer of the 95 Express Lanes project has been tapped by the federal government to apply for a loan to help pay for the lanes.

Transurban-Fluor will convert the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes on Interstate 95, from Dumfries to Edsall Road in Alexandria, to toll lanes. The lanes will be extended from Dumfries to Va. 610 in North Stafford to complete the 29-mile, $940 million 95 Express Lanes corridor.

For commuters in Northern Virginia, there are several different options of transportation available. People who work in Washington or surrounding areas can choose between different bus lines, Metro, Virginia Railway Express, or they may choose to carpool or Slug.

Slug lines are often located along commuter bus routes or near Metro stations, as the bus or Metro can serve as an alternative when Slug rides are scarce. In order to get to certain Slug or bus lines, sometimes commuters may have to ride a couple of stops on Metro, of which I am not a huge fan.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A portion of the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes will close again tonight and tomorrow as work on the 95 Express Lanes project ramps up.

The HOV express lanes facility is normally open to southbound drivers Friday night through Saturday afternoon. Tonight and tomorrow beginning at 11 p.m., however, the lanes will close from Franconia-Springfield Parkway to Va. 234 in Dumfries as crews complete test boring work.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Police released the names of two motorcyclists killed this weekend in separate crashes on Joplin Road.

Christopher Lee Capo, 34, of Dumfries, was killed Saturday morning near the intersection of Joplin and Park Headquarters roads near Triangle when the driver of a 2007 Volkswagen Golf traveling west on the two lane road tried to make a U-turn. The car crossed into the path of an oncoming 2010 Aprilia RSV4 motorcycle.
