MANASSAS — Manassas residents face another tax hike to fund city schools.
A new funding agreement approved by the city’s joint finance committee will head to the city council and could increase the property tax rate by more than 10 cents over the next three years. It would come on top of tax increases levied in recent by city leaders for new capital projects like a new public safety center on Grant Avenue.
MANASSAS — Police have yet to locate a man who they suspect called 911 and told authorities he was near George C. Round Elementary School, armed with a gun.
That 911 call about 1 p.m. Tuesday sparked a system-wide lockdown of all Manassas City Public Schools as police swarmed the area outside Round Elementary. No gunman was ever seen. Police pinged the cell phone used to call 911 to a location near Round Elementary, however, the cell phone has also not been found.

STAFFORD — The Stafford County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday, June 5 to consider adopting the 2018-2019 capital improvement plan.
Earlier in May, the Board heard from the members of the county’s infrastructure committee about a plan to build an addition to the current courthouse. County officials have planned to redevelop the area at the intersection of Route 1 and Courthouse Road, for several years, around the existing courthouse into an area called “downtown Stafford.”
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — Prince William County’s highly paid school’s superintendent should hold regular meetings with the public in the same manner as the county’s police chief.
That’s the recommendation of a recent report from Gainesville District Supervisor Peter Candland, who doubts the ability of Schools Superintendent Steven L. Walts’ ability to lead the division following complaints from parents and faculty in the wake of an internal investigation into former Ronald Regan Middle School Alfie Turner.
The Rotary Club of Bull Run recognized five outstanding students from the Greater Manassas area, awarding each with $1,500 in scholarship funds.

Christ Chapel Academy and PwcMoms.com held a “School Options” seminar at the Woodbridge church, to representatives from various homeschool, private school, and extracurricular educational programs.
MANASSAS — Record enrollment in Manassas Public Schools is driving the need to build a new elementary school, which could send the city’s tax rate skyrocketing.
The news of the potential tax hike comes on the heels of a 3.72 percent tax increase approved this week by the city council that takes effect in the fiscal year 2019 starting July 1, which hiked the average homeowner real estate tax bill to $4,075 percent to cover a promise to provide an additional 2.65 percent school funding increase. Last year, taxes jumped five percent to fund new capital improvement projects like a new police station to be built on South Grant Avenue.
