Prince William County Public Schools Superintendent Steven L. Walts addressed a hair-raising situation that occurred at C.D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge on Tuesday, April 30.

A student faces charges after police said he brought a gun to school and was showing it off to another student when the gun went off inside the school building.


LAKE RIDGE — Lillie G. Jessie is running to keep her seat on the Prince William County School Board.

I am currently in the process of taking the first steps to officially run for another four-year term as your Occoquan School Board representative. There are so many candidates for other offices this year. I did not want to announce my candidacy and start filing paperwork until the filing deadline for other candidates had passed.


STAFFORD — The Stafford County School Board approved a 5% raise for all school employees in the county.

The across-the-board raise will cover teachers, bus drivers, administrators, and the superintendent which will cost the county a total of $10.6 million.


STAFFORD COUNTY — Two finalists in the Washington Post’s annual educator awards work in Stafford County.

Benjamin Diggs, Instructional Technology Resource Teacher at North Stafford High School, and Robert Bingham, Principle of H. H. Poole Middle School, were finalists in the Washington Post Teacher and Principal of the Year contests.


DALE CITY — Nearly 2,000 home-schooled students in Prince William County will soon have the opportunity to take classes with other students.

A new Woodbridge Homeschool Co-Op will begin meeting at Hillendale Baptist Church in Dale City this fall. The co-op will offer kindergarten through 12th grade homeschooled students the opportunity to take three classes per week with other students.


STAFFORD — Cydny A. Neville, MAEd, a  teacher from Rodney Thompson Middle School in Stafford County, has been selected as an NEH Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of 32 summer seminars and institutes supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The endowment is a federal agency that, each summer, supports these enrichment opportunities at colleges, universities, and cultural institutions so teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines.


STAFFORD — Germanna Community College’s Stafford campus is growing quickly forcing the college to expand the overcrowded campus.

The Stafford campus named the Barbara J. Fried Center when it opened in summer 2018 near Stafford Hospital is already having capacity problems. The campus already has 700 students enrolled in its first year of use.


FAIRFAX — (Press release) The 58 best high school robotics teams from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. will compete in the FIRST Chesapeake District Championship at George Mason University April 12-13, 2019.
