Toastmasters International District 29 will host its annual Spring Conference on May 3 and 4 at the Hyatt Fairfax at Fair Lakes, Virginia. The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC) is holding a free business seminar and luncheon for employers in Prince William County on April 24, 2013. The seminar — entitled “Financing Commuting Programs with Federal Tax Benefits and Other Incentives” — is being offered as part of PRTC’s Omni SmartCommute Program. MANASSAS, Va. — A dog was found dead in a trashcan, it’s mouth and feet each bound with duct tape.
A second dog was found injured alongside a street was taken to an area veterinarian for treatment, and now a Manassas area man faces a string of charges.
WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A Woodbridge man faces charges of assault and battery after a woman was beat up at a party.
It happened Friday night when the 25-year-old victim told police she was at a home in the 3300 block of Blazer Loop in Woodbridge she got into an argument with the person she came to the gathering with. That argument escalated and she was then forced into a bathroom where she was assaulted by the acquaintance, according to a police report.

MANASSAS, Va. — On Saturday May 4, Crossroads Realty, PWC Entertainment and other area vendors will hold a special concert at the Olde Town Sports Pub. The Rock Show, a Journey tribute band, and the Rick Sickman Band will play hits songs from the 1980s. Proceeds from the show will go to benefit Operation Renewed Hope an organization that helps homeless veterans.
DUMFIRES, Va. — Jennifer Stringfellow likes Dumfries and its older houses. She ought to, as she is the head of the town’s Architectural Review Board (ARB), a volunteer commission charged with overseeing development, changes, and preserving the town’s historic district that includes an old street grid, something that resembles Old Town Alexandria’s layout.
The small town, Virginia’s oldest continuously charted town of 5,000 residents, wasn’t always known for its busy U.S. 1. When it was founded in 1749 it was one of the nation’s largest deep water ports, and water flowed right up to present day Main Street and the street grid. Many of the old homes and buildings are no longer there, but the Weems-Botts House, Williams Ordinary, the Anderson House that sits about a block away from the Weems-Botts House, Town Hall, and homes that are more than 50-years-old are all in the district.

I notice a lot of Government Agencies at all levels have “Centers of Excellence” to ensure the highest standards of service. I’ve been involved in a few over the years, and I have matured my thinking to realize that centers devoted to driving up the size, cost, and complexity of government are perhaps not such a great idea.
