Volunteer Opportunities Range from Healthcare, Veterans Assistance, to Basketball Tourney

Good morning – The Greater Prince William Community Health Center is celebrating National Health Center Week on August 13-15 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. Volunteers are needed every day to assist with free health screenings such as mammograms, checks for cholesterol, anemia, diabetes, heart disease, depression, vision and dental to name just a few.

The event will include free car seats, lunch, and music and fun children’s entertainment. So as you can see, your volunteer effort will make a huge impact on thousands of individuals participating in this super event. There will also be a volunteer orientation on Friday August 9 at 1 p.m. to give you all the specifics to jump right in and help. Quantico Gets First Offices Since Town Incorporated in 1927

QUANTICO, Va. — For the first time the town was incorporated in 1927, Quantico has an office all to its own.

Mayor Kevin Brown said the town will rent space at 337 5th Avenue in the town, which is the only municipality in the U.S. completely surrounded by a military base.

Logmill Road Improvement Meeting Planned

Logmill Road in western Prince William County has been described as a scenic drive with the Bull Run Mountain in the backdrop.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Officials plan to improve a section of Logmill Road in Prince William County. The hilly two-lane road in recent years has been the site of several crashes, some that were fatal and involved teenagers.

Transportation officials say they want to a improve a portion of Logmill Road, between Parnell Court and Meander Creek Lane, to improve the sight distance to make it easier to see oncoming drivers, as well as improve the vertical lines of the roadway.

DUMFRIES, Va. — Two weeks of strongly-worded emails among members of the Dumfries Business Association came to a head Wednesday night.

It started when Chris Caldwell, who runs a consulting firm in Dumfries, emailed a list of members of the Dumfries Business Association. In the emails, Caldwell questioned the number of meetings the organization holds, the effectiveness of the group’s leadership, and suggested the organization be a stronger voice in local politics.

Crash Involving School Bus Impacts Bristow Road Drivers

BRISTOW, Va. — A school bus was involved in a crash at the intersection of Bristow Road and Gallop Lane this afternoon, near Bristow Manor Golf Club.

There were no students on the bus at the time of the crash, and the driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash was treated at the scene, stated Prince William County Public Schools spokeswoman Irene Cromer.

Elementary School Police Officer Plan Moves Ahead

DUMFRIES, Va. — Dumfries officials will vote on whether or not to install a Police School Resource Officer, or SRO, at Dumfries Elementary School.

Police Chief Rebecca Edwards on Tuesday asked town officials to place a memorandum of understanding with the town police department and Prince William County Public Schools on the consent agenda for the Aug. 7 meeting of the Dumfries Town Council. If it’s approved, Dumfries Elementary School will be the first and only elementary school in Prince William with a dedicated police officer offering protection to students and staff. The officer would be stationed at the school in time for the start of the upcoming school year.
