WOODBRIDGE, Va. — The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) will participate in the third annual No Woman, No Cry: Stop the Silence of Domestic Violence 5K Walk in memory of Jenny Vaughn-Bates on Saturday, Sept. 14th.

Bates was murdered in 2010 by her abusive husband, who then took his own life, in Prince William County, Va. The walk/run will be held at Potomac Senior High School in Dumfries, Virginia.


PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Members of the Lake Jackson/Mid-County Lions Club recently volunteered their time at the Park West satellite location of the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center of Northern Virginia (LERCNOVA).

At the Park West location, eyeglasses that are collected from donation boxes located throughout the community, are cleaned and sanitized.The prescription is then read using a lensometer machine. After the glasses are read, they are bagged and sent to the LERCNOVA for distribution to needy individuals around the world.


DALE CITY, Va. — A water tank in Dale City is getting a face lift.

The Packard Water Tank on Gideon Drive in the Ashdale section of Dale City will be repainted for the first time since 1999. With corrosion on its roof, Virginia American Water — which owns and maintains the tank — will also replace it at the same time the paint job is completed.


DUMFRIES, Va. — Christine Sanders accepted a new job with the Arlington County Attorney’s Office. She’ll step down as the Town Attorney in Dumfries Sept. 8.

During her tenure in the town, Sanders has advised elected leaders and town staff on a host of issues including the opening of Ginn Memorial Park, wranglings over adding a silent moment of reflection at the start of each Town Council Meeting, and during ongoing talks with the Potomac Landfill that wants to keep piling construction debris upward instead of outward.


DALE CITY, Va. — Water has been restored to some 200 customers in Dale City who lost it Sunday night, and we now know more about the cause of the problem.

The break was caused by rusted bonnet bolts that, when working properly, provide a leak-proof enclosure for the water value on the main. The main that ruptured Sunday night on Catalpa Court in Dale City was 12-inches wide, said Virginia American Water spokeswoman Samantha Villegas.


WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A suspicious package at IKEA Tuesday morning prompted customers to go elsewhere, and it led to a free lunch for employees.

A clothes hamper was found in the 2-story furniture store at Potomac Mills mall about 9:30 a.m. The store called police who spent the better portion of the next two hours investigating the hamper, which turned out to be harmless.


DALE CITY, Va. — Chunks of asphalt, rocks, mud, and other debris were left behind after a geyser erupted on Catalpa Court in Dale City.

A water main break Sunday night on the neighborhood street in the Catbrier Heights section near Dale City Volunteer Fire Department Station 10 on Dale Boulevard left at least 50 townhomes without water.


WOODBIRDGE, Va. — The memories of two small boys killed eight months ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut will continue to sail on the waters of the Potomac River.

A Catalina 22 sailboat bearing the name “Benjamin Chase,” named after Benjamin Wheeler, 6, and Chase Kowalski, 7, both killed in a mass shooting inside their elementary school in Newtown, Conn. that took the lives of 26 people in December, now sails the Potomac River.


PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — In 2006, voters in Prince William County approved the option of floating an $27 million bond to improve park facilities.

One of those projects was a planned $11 million expansion of the heavily used Chinn Aquatics and Fitness Center in Woodbridge. One of the area’s few indoor public pools, the swim lanes are used daily from about 4:30 a.m. to about 10 o’clock at night.
