MANASSAS, Va. — The Prince William County Fair kicks off today.

Gates are scheduled to open at 5 p.m. for the largest county fair in Virginia, and it’s set to feature one of the most popular attractions at the fair starting at 7 p.m. — a demolition derby.

GAINESVILLE, Va. –– Jimmy Buffett proved to be too much for construction crews, so work to switch the flow of traffic at a major Gainesville intersection has been postponed.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will shift traffic on to a new bridge that will carry on Linton Hall Road over U.S. 29, which will eliminate an at-grade crossing notoriously known as the site of several collisions with trains and cars.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — The idea of building a $10 million swimming facility at Prince William County’s next high school was floated again last night.

The county’s Board of Supervisors and School Board met for dinner during a rare joint session Tuesday. There, members heard got an earful about plans for the school from School Board Chairman Milton Johns, but both boards couldn’t reach an agreement on who would build the pool and who would maintain it, the county government or the county school division.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Virginia Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton accomplished two things today.

First, he told Prince William elected officials that a Bi-County Parkway from Interstate 66 near Manassas to Dulles Airport, and its eventual connection to Va. 234 and Interstate 95 in Dumfries, would not be used to transport heavy cargo.

QUANTICO, Va. — The Town of Quantico will hold a party on Labor Day weekend.

The “Salute to Our Troops” fireworks show will be a free event with music and food. It’ll be a chance for the town to say thank you to U.S. service members for their service to the nation.

WOODBRIGDE, Va. — Virginia Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton is coming to Woodbridge to talk about the hotly-debated Bi-County Parkway.

The secretary, who once led the Prince William County Board of Supervisors as its chairman, will address the Board at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

NOKESVILLE, Va. — In a rural schoolhouse, the future of Prince William County’s Rural Crescent was considered.

The crescent-shaped area of land from the Potomac River at Quantico, north through Nokesville and Haymarket, and around to Manassas National Battlefield, was designated in 1998 as a place where suburban sprawl would be limited, homes would only be built on 10-acre lots, and access to public sewage would only be permitted at new developments under certain circumstances.

OCCOQUAN, Va. — More than 80 people on Sunday will see Prince William County’s four towns from the seat of their bicycle.

The first-ever “Tour of the Towns — Tour of Prince William” organized by Occoquan Mayor Earnie Porta has closed it’s registration books, and the response to the idea of touring the country by bike has caught on.

GAINESVILLE, Va. — What do you get when you mix a major construction project and Jimmy Buffet? On the weekend of August 16 through 18, it’s a recipe for road delays.

Virginia Department of Transportation officials working to improve the intersection at U.S. 29 and Linton Hall Road, where a series new bridges will carry traffic on Linton Hall Road over U.S. 29 and a railroad, told drivers Wednesday to soon expect major delays in the area.
