Opinion: Route 28 bypass a bad investment for Prince William taxpayers

On Tuesday, July 14, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors will vote whether or not to endorse the county transportation staff’s recommended Route 28 bypass project location – Alternative 2B.

Alternative 2B will extend Godwin Drive to existing Route 28 just south of Compton Road at the Fairfax County border and requires the condemnation of at least 50 single-family homes. In addition to the $89 million in Northern Virginia Transportation Authority funding already allocated, this project will also require the Board of County Supervisors to commit $200 million in bond funding in the near future which will require the Board to pay off this bond with some form of increased tax.

Rallies to reopen schools will be held in two Northern Virginia counties today.

First at 4:30 p.m., the “Open Spotsy Schools Protest” will be held outside the Spotsylvania County Public Schools Administration Building at 8020 River Stone Drive. The protest is being organized by 13-year-old student Hayley Searles, who tipped off Potomac Local News about the protest.

Occoquan’s FY21 town budget reflects coronavirus uncertainty

Occoquan approved its Fiscal Year 2021 budget, but, according to Mayor Earnie Porta, the budget is almost certain to change as the fiscal year progresses.

“At this time there is nothing in particular that I would highlight. We adopted a budget recognizing that in all likelihood it would need to be amended during the year as conditions related to the COVID-19 pandemic develop,” Porta said.

Free coronavirus testing offered this week in Prince William region

As the pandemic continues and businesses have begun to reopen to the public, free coronavirus testing will be offered at multiple locations in Prince William County, Manassas, and Manassas Park.

Here is where they are stated to be located, according to a press release sent to us by Woodbridge District Supervisor Margaret Franklin.

$130 million Dumfries Route 1 realignment, widening fully funded

The effort to realign Route 1 in Dumfries has been more than 20 years in the making and, as of today, the project is fully funded.

The town was awarded $78 million by the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority to complete they two-mile widening project that will see the northbound portion of Route 1 (Frayley Boulevard), between Brady’s Hill Road and Route 234 widened to six lanes.

The comments on a Facebook page maintained by a Prince William County elected official are now visible to the public.

Prince William County Soil and Water Director Tiziana Bottino posted an apology to her “Tiziana for Prince William County Soil and Water Director” Facebook page following a story published by Potomac Local News that detailed the comments Bottino made on this news organization’s Facebook page, on a story about the election of Tim Parrish as the new Prince William County Republican Committee Chairman.

Prince William schools consider reopening plans, delayed start date

Prince William County Schools students may be staying home longer, and not just for summer vacation.

On June 7 and 8, the Prince William County School board held two meetings where they discussed school reopening plans for the 2020-21 school year and received input from the community. During the meeting, Prince William County Schools Superintendent Steven L. Walts proposed four reopening plans for the upcoming school years, delayed school start days, and the delay of the first day of school to September 8.

Dumfries budget report: 944% increase in FOIA, miscellaneous revenues in 2020

Apparently, public information doesn’t come cheap in Dumfries.

The town collected $24,000 in revenues from Freedom of Information Act requests, and other miscellaneous fees in the Fiscal Year 2020, which ended June 30. The line item amount represents a 944% increase over what the town had anticipated for the year, which was $2,500, according to a preliminary budget report provided to the town council.

Dynamic speed signs go up on express lanes, number of speeding tickets go down

Dynamic speed signs have been set up on the E-ZPass Express Lanes on Interstates 95 and 495.

Transurban, the Australian-based transportation company that operates the express lanes, installed the new speed signs for a trial run. Much like traffic radar signs that drivers see along the roadside in neighborhoods, dynamic signs will show how fast a vehicle is going within the express lane.
