Woodbridge, Va. –– The Potomac Nationals and Salem Red Sox saw their first half come to an early end Sunday afternoon, as heavy rains forced the cancellation of the final game in the season’s opening stanza. Potomac finishes the first half at 29-40, while the Sox post a 31-38 mark.

After dropping the first three of their 14-game homestand, the Nationals won seven of ten to close the half.


Mountain View High School will graduate 460 students in its fifth graduating class tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.  This class collectively earned over 3.5 million dollars in scholarships, a school record. The Valedictorian is Miranda Reichhardt.  The Salutatorian is Brittany Scites.

Stafford High School will graduate 418 students at their ceremony Saturday at 8:30 a.m.  The Valedictorian is Ik Su Oh and the Salutatorian is Matthew Francom.  Stafford High has 4 sets of twins (Brittany and Michael Hicks, Chris and Maya Mardini, Jennifer and Michael Mongrain and Britney and Lauren Wible) in this graduating class and the first of the African refugee students, Nijimbere Eliphase, will graduate.


In a memo released Friday, Chief Kevin McGee condemned what he called an “alarming and unacceptable” number of DUI-related arrests of employees.

“I know you realize that society does not condone impaired driving, and if any profession should be setting the example it should be fire and rescue,” McGee stated in the memo.


Stafford, Va. –– Officials named four new administrators to fill positions at schools in Stafford County. 

Lisa Besceglia, a former special education teacher and assistant principal at Dixon-Smith Middle School since 2005 has been named the principal. She replaces Principal Steve Trant who opened the school in 2006 and has spent 36 years working within the school system, said Stafford County Public Schools spokeswoman Valerie Cottongim.


Six of the nine Sox had multi-hit games, headlined by Shannon Wilkerson and Dan Butler. Wilkerson had two hits, a three-run homer and four RBIs, while Butler went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three runs driven in.

The Nationals (28-39) committed three more errors to run their league-leading total to 83, and the Sox (30-37) cashed them in for four unearned runs en route to just their tenth win in their last 40 games.


The Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue was honored with a Governor’s Transportation Safety Award for sending safety messages twice a day to all personnel through cell phones and email, reinforcing the county’s safety policies –– including the dangers of distracted and impaired driving.

“This is a dangerous job, but by sending out these messages is just one more tool in our toolbox to help a safer workplace,” said Prince William County Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Chief Hadden Culp.


Motorists will soon enjoy shorter travel times from Prince William County into Fairfax County after the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) opens an additional northbound lane of Interstate 95 across the Occoquan River on Friday, June 17.

This portion of the northbound lanes stretches 2.5 miles from Route 123 to the Route 1. It is part of the final phase of the I-95 widening project.  


Woodbridge, Va. –– Residents will now have a chance to touch a piece of the ill-fated World Trade Center.

Four pieces of steel from the buildings which collapsed on September 11, 2001 were trucked to Woodbridge on Thursday where they will eventually be displayed.
