Free Backpacks Help Explorers at Leesylvania

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Leesylvania Park in Woodbridge offers children young and old the chance to rent a backpack to explore the park. Backpacks are free and can be rented at the Visitor Center:

Birding – Get to know our feathered friends with this backpack. Inside you will find binoculars, a book that will tell you everything there is to know about being a bird, an Identiflyer bird song identifier, and two color field guides to help you. Also included are a nature journal to record your observations, coloring pages and park trail guides.

Government Contractor Locates in Dumfries

DUMFRIES, Va. — Economic development officials in Dumfries reeled in a big fish.

Alaskan government contractor Bowhead will open a new facility next to Town Hall on July 18. The company will welcome locally-elected officials for a tour of their new facility, and President of Bowhead’s parent company, UIC, Anthony Edwardsen and UIC Board Chair Price Brower, will be at the opening. Both men hail from Barrow Alaska, according to company spokesman Jack Gaige.

10 Seek to Replace Uncle Slam

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Ten mascots have stepped in to pinch hit for Uncle Slam who will sit out the rest of the season.

The iconic mascot for the Potomac Nationals had his suit damaged in a June 29 fire that ripped through the management offices at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge. No one was injured, but the suit was ruined by smoke. The stadium reopened to fans on July 4.

Fire Crews Called to Quantico Business Center

NORTH STAFFORD, Va. — Fire and rescue crews have been called to a Navy Federal Credit Union branch at Quantico Corporate Center on U.S. 1.

Initial reports indicate a smoky haze was noticed in the building, and the building was evacuated. Crews initially reported seeing no fire at the building.

DALE CITY, Va. — It was fire and ice at the Prince William Ice Center on Monday.

Fire and rescue crews from Prince William County spent the morning training for a potential HAZMAT situation in an exercise that included 20 department personnel.

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Rain or shine, the cardboard boats will once again this year take to the Potomac River.

Stafford’s Rock Hill Ruitan’s Club will hold their annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at Aquia Landing Park in Stafford County on Saturday, July 21. The gates open at 10 a.m., and attendees can expect to see some creative works of art that may or may not float.

Dumfries Opposes I-95 Tolls

DUMFRIES, Va. — Elected officials in Dumfries had no argument when it comes to opposing tolling on the travel lanes of Interstate 95.

The Town Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to pass a resolution opposing plans to toll the major east coast thoroughfare which runs through the town. The road is also a sticking point for residents who don’t like the noise the highway generates.
