DUMFRIES, Va. – The Dumfries Town Council swore in incumbent Gwen Washington and new councilman Derrick Wood on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Washington was the only candidate on the ballot during the Nov. 6 General Election.
Washington is a life-long resident of Dumfries and a staff member at Dumfries Elementary School. An incumbent, she was appointed to the town council to serve following the death of Mayor Fred Yohey to fill a seat vacated by Nancy West, who no longer serves on the council.
DUMFIRES, Va. — What does the inside of the Possum Point Power station look like? Just ask 74 students who toured the facility last week as part of a special field trip two the facility in Dumfries owned by Dominion Virginia Power.
While there the students got an overview of what it’s like to work in the power generation station, and what operations take place in the station’s welding shop, maintenance shed, and environmental sciences department.
DUMFRIES, Va. — Prince William police said two men recently struck by Virginia Railway Express trains during two separate incidents appeared to be suicidal.
Police told Fredericksburg.com that a 44-year-old man jumped in front of an oncoming train at the Cherry Hill Peninsula near Dumfries Nov. 5.
WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A woman was taken to a hospital suffering smoke inhalation Sunday night.
Volunteer fire and rescue crews were called to a single-family home on Grayson Road in Woodbridge at 8:42 p.m. A caller to 911 reported seeing smoke at the house, said OWL Volunteer Fire Department spokeswoman Rebecca Barnes.
WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A woman was attacked this morning as she was cleaning a Woodbridge hotel room.

The 495 Express Lanes — those High Occupancy Toll or HOT lanes we’ve been hearing about for so long — opened for the first time on Saturday to traffic. That means those with three or more inside a vehicle can ride the lanes for free with an E-Z Pass Flex transponder. Single drivers must pay a toll to use the lanes, and can use a traditional E-Z Pass or E-Z Pass Flex.
I attended the latest in a series of fiscal year 2014 budget information meetings on Saturday at the Prince William County Government Center.
I always enjoy watching budget director Michelle Casiato’s mastery of the process. Prince William has three Triple A bond ratings and has won numerous awards for their budgeting process. I understand that the process is “bullet proof.” I also understand that the process has nothing to do with how much money Prince William County collects or what the government spends it on.

Attempted Abduction – On November 17th at 8:27AM, police responded to the Roadway Inn located at 13964 Jefferson Davis Highway in Woodbridge (22191) to investigate an attempted abduction. The victim, a 46 year old woman, reported to police that she was walking her dog in the lot adjacent to the rear of the Roadway Inn when she was approached by an unknown man.
DUMFRIES, Va. — A Dumfries police officer was taken to a hospital, treated, and released Friday after she was involved in a crash.
It happened on Fraley Boulevard (U.S. 1) at 6:30 p.m., just south of Graham Park Road. Another driver rear-ended the police officer, said Dumfries police Chief Robert Forker.
