Prince William County’s Department of Fire & Rescue has started to collect toys for the Toys for Tots Foundation for this holiday season. The toy donation drive will run from November 14 to December 20.
More information from a press release from the Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue:
The Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue has begun collecting toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation. The toy collection began on November 14th and will run through December 20, 2014.
Please drop off toys to any Prince William County, City of Manassas Park and Manassas City fire station, Prince William County Public Safety Training Center in Nokesville as well as the lobby at the McCoart Government Center in Woodbridge. Toys must be new and unwrapped. Due to the requirements of the Marine Toys for Tots, clothes and used toys cannot be received for this event. Please drop off used toys and clothing to churches and shelters in your neighborhood.
All toys will be delivered to the Toys for Tots collection site for processing and delivery to pre-authorized organizations who have requested toys. Fire stations are not permitted to deliver these toys directly to citizens. Please contact your local Marine Toys for Tots Foundation distribution center for details.
Toys for Tots can use your time as well; the distribution center needs help sorting thousands of toys. Donations of food and drinks for the volunteer workers are appreciated.
Toys for Tots is a national charity program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which collects and distributes toys to less fortunate children whose parents may be struggling financially and unable to purchase gifts during the traditional Christmas Holiday season. It is the only charitable endeavor associated with the Department of Defense that reaches out to local communities. The program was started in 1947, in California, by Major William L. Hendricks and was inspired by his wife, Diane, when she tried to donate a doll to a needy child but could not find an organization to do so. At Diane’s suggestion, Major Hendricks gathered a group of local Marine reservists who coordinated and collected 5,000 toys for local children. Hendricks used his position as director of public relations at Warner Brothers Studio to enlist celebrity support and later asked his friend, Walt Disney, to design a poster for a national campaign. The result was the three-car, red train logo.
Shane Black, of Stafford, is a member of the Lafayette football team participating in the 150th meeting of college football's most-played rivalry at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 22. More than 49,000 tickets have been sold for the game, which will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
Black is a graduate of Mercersburg Academy and a senior.
The two schools, which are located 15 miles apart in Pennsylvania, first met in "The Rivalry" in 1884, one year after standardized football rules were instituted in the United States. Lafayette leads the all-time series 77-67-5 and won the 2013 meeting 50-28 en route to a Patriot League title and an FCS playoff berth.

Meals for hungry packed at Manassas Park Community Center
Volunteers packed nearly 90,000 meals for the poor during the House of Mercy’s fourth annual “Campaign to End Hunger” fundraiser and meal-packing event, Oct. 18 at the Manassas Park Community Center.
Although falling short of the nonprofit humanitarian organization’s goal of 150,000 meals packed during this year’s all-day event, the total is still “a success in our book,” said House of Mercy Executive Director Ann Cimini. “Through the generosity of hundreds of people and our corporate sponsors, we’ve been able to serve the poorest of God’s children,” she said.

Expect to see Trummer’s Coffee & Wine Bar and Uncle Julio’s Rio Grande to join the list of new businesses that have opened a location at the Promenade at Virginia Gateway in Gainesville.
More information from a Peterson Companies press release:
Peterson Companies announced today that Trummer’s Coffee & Wine Bar and Uncle Julio’s Rio Grande will open new locations at Promenade at Virginia Gateway. The two latest additions join the growing roster of upscale shopping, dining and entertainment destinations at the 300,000 square foot lifestyle center that opened in April 2014 in Gainesville, VA.
The 1,400 square foot Trummer’s Coffee & Wine Bar will feature a robust coffee menu, unique European coffee creations, house-made pastries, fresh fried Beignets, open-faced sandwiches, cheese plates, soups, salads, specialty cocktails and wine by the glass. This is the next concept from the owners of Trummer’s on Main, an award-winning restaurant in Clifton, VA, and Cupcakes Actually. The new Gainesville restaurant will be located near the Plaza, next to Francesca’s, and will open December 2014.
“Trummer’s Coffee & Wine Bar will be modeled after European Coffee Houses that have been around for hundreds of years in countries such as Austria, Hungary, Italy and France. By day it will be a fabulous spot to plug in your laptop and sip coffee with European pastries. By night, stop in for a light dinner and fabulous wines” says Victoria Trummer, co-owner of Trummer’s Coffee & Wine Bar and Trummer’s on Main. Adding, “Promenade at Virginia Gateway is the perfect location for our second restaurant, and we look forward to joining the Gainesville community.”
The 8,100 square foot Uncle Julio’s Rio Grande will be its fifth location in the state. The popular Mexican restaurant serves authentic, house-made Mexican dishes with the freshest ingredients. Uncle Julio’s at Promenade will offer its traditional tacos, enchiladas and tamales, along with specialties like marinated and mesquite grilled beef and chicken fajitas, ribs and jumbo shrimp. The new Mexican restaurant will be located adjacent to BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse and will feature a full bar serving signature drinks like The Swirl, Julio’s Skinny Guavarita, Passion Fruit Margarita and more. Uncle Julio’s Rio Grande at Promenade will offer outdoor dining and plans to open in summer 2015.
“These new restaurants will nicely round out our current mix of offerings at Promenade, further solidifying it as the premier shopping and dining destination in Gainesville,” stated Taylor O. Chess, President of Retail for Peterson Companies. Adding, “We’re thrilled to bring these two popular, local and award-winning restaurants directly to the Gainesville community.”
The Prince William County GOP will be doing their last community service project of 2014 – collecting food at the Haymarket Food Bank, to help with food needs for the Thanksgiving holiday.
More information from a PWC GOP press release:
The Bull Run Republican Women’s Club is leading a community service project this month to benefit the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry. The Club is continuing the Prince William County Republican Committee’s focus on community service by collecting donated nonperishable food items for needy families in Western Prince William County. This service project will be the tenth and final Committee community service project for 2014.
Participants can drop off their donations at the next monthly Prince William County Republican Committee meeting on Monday, November 24, at 7:30pm, at Benton Middle School. Donations can also be dropped off before November 25 at the Office of Gainesville Supervisor Pete Candland (7001 Heritage Village Plaza, Suite 210, Gainesville, VA 20155) during the weekday between 9am-5pm, or at the Prince William County Republican Committee headquarters (4431 Prince William Pkwy, Woodbridge, VA 22192) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 10am-4pm. Any County resident can participate in the project, regardless of political affiliation.
“Even in a region that has as much wealth as northern Virginia, there are still many families who are in need this holiday season,” said Chairman Bill Card. “We’re proud to support the great work of the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry, as they continue to help some of our neighbors who may be going through a rough time.”
Card continued, “This project is the conclusion of a very successful Community Service Initiative for the Prince William Republican Committee. This Initiative has provided us a way to serve the community and live out our principles of service, compassion and private sector solutions.”
On February 22nd, the Prince William Republican Committee announced its new Community Service Initiative during its annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. So far, the Committee has conducted two food bank collections with Streetlight Ministries in Woodbridge (February/June), and a clothing collection with B.A.R.N. transitional housing in Bristow, led by the Bull Run Republican Women’s Club (March). The Committee has also conducted an emergency items collection for SERVE, Inc in Manassas (April), and has assisted with Supervisor Pete Candland’s ‘Walk for Prince William,’ which benefited five County food banks (May).
On June 21st, the Committee performed two community service projects for a “Day of Summer Service”, with ACTS Homeless Shelter in Dumfries and the Bull Run Wounded Warrior Retreat in Haymarket. In August, the Committee partnered with the Prince William County Education Foundation to conduct a back-to-school supply drive for two schools in Woodbridge, Fred Lynn Middle School and Elizabeth Vaughn Elementary School.
