Members of Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary and local community volunteers (40 total volunteers) packed 10,000 meals at the old Pace West school in Haymarket on May 2.

 These meals are to be shipped overseas to feed those in need in  regions such as Haiti and Nepal.  

The effort was completed in collaboration with the Stop Hunger Now campaign.

All lanes of Interstate 9vdotlogo5 at Fredericksburg will be briefly stopped just after midnight on Sunday, May 17 for utility work.

The complete traffic stop is expected to last approximately 15 minutes.

Crews will be stretching utility lines across all travel  lanes of I-95 northbound and southbound at the Fall Hill Avenue overpass. The overpass is located between Exit 130 at Route 3 in Fredericksburg, and Exit 133 at Falmouth in Stafford County. 

Virginia State Police will assist with a slow roll of traffic, which is a gradual slowing of traffic one lane at a time. Motorists should be alert for police activity and expect delays.

Potomac Health Foundation announced Timothy McCue as its new director of grant programs. As director of grant programs, Mr. McCue will oversee the Foundation’s grant programs.

Prior to joining the team at the Potomac Health Foundation, Timothy served as Senior Program Officer at the William J. and Dorothy K. O’Neill Foundation headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio from 2009 until 2015. During his tenure at the O’Neill Foundation, Timothy helped the Foundation redefine the vision and mission, launched new grantmaking strategies, built a best in class youth philanthropy program, and evaluated the Foundation’s grantmaking across eleven metropolitan communities across the United States.

Prior to the O’Neill Foundation he spent almost four years at the Cleveland Department of Public Health (CDPH) in the Health Promotion division organizing in-house programming, such as Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound, and managing contracts with outside agencies, such as the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and American Lung Association, which performed community interventions under the Steps to a Healthier Cleveland brand. Prior to CDPH, Timothy worked at the Saint Luke’s Foundation in Cleveland.

In the community, Timothy has been a member of the Cuyahoga County Next Generation Council, a graduate of Cleveland Bridge Builders and a 2013 recipient of the Cleveland Professional 20/30 Club’s Movers and Shakers Top 25 Under 35 award. He received his master’s degree in public health from Case Western Reserve University.

Potomac Health Foundation is an independent foundation whose mission is to improve the health of the community by increasing access to primary health care for the medically underserved, reducing the incidence of preventable disease, and supporting innovation around emerging health needs.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will host a workshop on Thursday, May 21 to provide information on how small businesses can properly register and compete for business opportunities with the state agency. 

VDOT representatives will be present to provide information and answer questions, assisted by representatives from eVa, Virginia’s Electronic Procurement System, and the Department of Small Business Supplier Diversity.

The Historic 10K will start near the Quarles Petroleum parking lot at 1701 Fall Hill Avenue. The Castleton Festival and the Hylton Performing Arts Center pair up this season to present an enchanting afternoon of romantic music that will touch the hearts of classical music lovers and Francophiles throughout the greater Washington, D.C. area. Under the direction of the Castleton Festival’s Principal Conductor Rafael Payare, Metropolitan Opera stars Robynne Redmon and Richard Troxell partner with the rising stars of the Castleton Festival to present “Toujours I’amour: French Masterpieces of Love” on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 4 p.m. in the Hylton Center’s elegant Merchant Hall. This performance is unique to the Hylton Center and complements the 2015 Castleton Festival events that take place from July 2-Aug. 2, 2015 at the Castleton Farms estate in Rappahannock County, Va. 

The program for this delightful performance includes French arias and duets from Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Charles Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette and overtures of symphonic splendor. New conductor star Maestro Rafael Payare will conduct the Castleton Festival Orchestra, comprising talented music students and young professional artists, includingconcertmaster Paçalin Pavaci and Metropolitan Opera cellist Sam Magill.

After the performance, patrons can partake in a sumptuous buffet dinner of traditional French cuisine catered by À la Carte with special wine offering. Dinner is $60 per person and will be served at 6:30 p.m. in the Hylton Center’s Gregory Family Theater following the performance. Limited seating is available.

Forest Park High School in Woodbridge will be hosting a walk for suicide awareness on May 23.

The walk will be 6-miles, and begins at 9 a.m. that morning. 

The race was organized by students at the high school to bring awareness to the large number of individuals that commit suicide each year. 

According to a release, suicide is the 10th leading causes of death in the United States for all ages.

At the end of the walk, there will be a rally, where officials will speak about the challenges of suicide.

Fundrise, the country’s leading real estate investment marketplace, today announced that it has partnered with Buchanan Partners to provide $1.5 million in financing for the acquisition and recapitalization of the Innovation Business Center in Manassas, Virginia.

The property is currently 100 percent occupied as flex office by eight tenants including Nikon, Tokyo Electron, The Commonwealth of Virginia, and Prince William County.

Fundrise investors in the project are expected to receive an annual return of 12% percent over the projected 36-month term.

Buchanan Partners was founded in 1998 and has acquired, developed, and owned over five million square feet of property including 4,000 residential units across the DC metro market, with current developments in Alexandria, Prince William, and Loudoun Counties in Northern Virginia.

“We are excited to be partnering with Buchanan, one of the leading development firms in the DC region,” said Ben Miller, co-founder and CEO of Fundrise “this type of investment is something that larger institutions would traditionally fight over, and to be able to offer it to investors through the platform shows how far crowdfunding has come.”

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office announces that the Law Enforcement United Bike Ride is coming through Stafford County today, Monday, May 11, 2015.

The Law Enforcement United Bike Ride will be entering Stafford County during the afternoon hours of, Monday, May 11 and will stop at the Public Safety Center, Humphrey Building, 1225 Courthouse Road, for a brief stop. The riders will spend the night in the area.

The Bike Ride will leave Stafford County in the morning, Tuesday, May 12 and should be out of Stafford County by mid-day.

Motorists are advised of the temporary rolling closings of Route 1, North as the Law Enforcement Tour Bike Ride travels through Stafford County. As soon as the riders clear a section of Route 1, that section of the road will be opened to motor vehicle traffic.
