Dear Fellow Woodbridge Residents,

The nearly $2 Billion FY2014 Prince William Budget goes into effect July 1, 2013 with funding from several revenue streams, including a real estate tax rate of $1.181 per $100 of assessed value for both homeowners and businesses. This represents a cut to the tax rate outlined in the Board of County Supervisor’s Five Year Plan and represents a tax burden on families and businesses that is 30% lower than surrounding Northern Virginia communities. While the budget cuts result in a failure to invest in many of our critical unmet needs, it is far better than the flat tax bill proposed by other Supervisors.

I am pleased to report that the FY2014 Budget includes many of the programs and services that directly impact our community. The budget includes:

· 29 additional Police Officers and 15 new School Resource Officers

· Construction of the new central district police station

· 15 additional Firefighters

· Route 1 Widening from Featherstone Road to Neabsco Mills Road

· A 1,200 space commuter parking garage at Potomac Town Center (financed with the Virginia Department of Transportation)

· Five case workers for the Intellectually Disabled

· Preservation of the Health Department’s Programs

· 7 Additional Classrooms at River Oaks Elementary School

· Stadium Lights at Veteran’s Park

· Upgrades to Middle School Playing Fields for use by the Community

· New Voting Machines

In addition, the Board also slightly improved the long-standing Revenue Sharing Agreement with the school system. By increasing the school’s portion of General Fund Revenues from 56.75 percent to 57.23 percent, our children in the school system will receive more local funding. Despite this, we have learned that the school system still faces significant cuts both from the state budget and from the reduced tax rate. Fundamental to this and all future budgets is the need to keep pace with a growing population and a higher cost of living. As our county continues to grow, our budget must keep pace with the rate of growth.

During this budget season, there were many proposals on the table – some that funded our critical unmet needs and others that would result in devastating cuts to the most vulnerable of our citizens. Please join me in the continued implementation of our vision of a New Woodbridge and making our community a truly great place to live, work, and play.

Learn more about the vision by friending us on Facebook, following us on Twitter, and visiting us at newwoodbridge.org. I’ll see you in the neighborhood!

Sincerely,

Frank J. Principi

MANASSAS, Va. – Project Mend-A-House has created Build A House, a fun summer crafts contest that also raises funds for this nonprofit’s great cause – helping the most vulnerable citizens in Prince William County who need minor repairs to their homes.

Individuals, families or teams of up to five people can build popsicle houses from craft sticks by purchasing a kit for $25 from Project Mend-A-House. Their creations will be judged at the Taste of the Town banquet in October, an annual fundraiser for Project Mend-A-House.

Contestants purchase a kit with 250 craft sticks, a foam core board (10” x 15”) and a glue container for a donation of $25. The building can be any type (house, barn, cabin, garage, etc.), and it must fit on and be attached to the foam core board. Participants may cut the popsicle sticks but can only use the kit’s sticks (more sticks may be purchased -100 sticks/$10). Other glues are also acceptable.

Buildings may be painted or decorated and the outside area may be landscaped, if desired. They will be judged on structural integrity, creativity and neatness (1st, 2nd and 3rd). There will also be fan favorites (1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention) chosen at the Taste of the Town, where the houses will serve as table centerpieces. Everyone attending will receive one free ticket to vote for their favorite house. All winners will receive a specially created Project Mend-A-House ribbon.

For nearly 30 years Project Mend-A-House has offered free home repairs and modifications to low- income seniors, people with disabilities and veterans in Prince William County. Dedicated volunteers repair broken fixtures, install safety equipment, build accessibility ramps and perform other tasks so that these individuals may remain safely and independently in their own homes.

Barbara Reese of BR Associates, the contest sponsor, said this is a wonderful family project. “We hope that this project will bring families together this summer to do something fun and also something that benefits the community.”

Last summer five-year-old Sarah Tamai threw herself into creating a bright pink little house for the Project Mend-A-House staff and volunteers. Her house had a rainbow, she said, “because Project Mend-A-House makes people happy with the work they do and they turn rainy days into nice days.”

To get your kit, call the Project Mend-A-House (PMAH) office at 703-792-7663. You can pick your kit up at the PMAH office or ask that it be delivered to your home or office.

What entices a child to get into the gym and work on the necessary fundamentals of their basketball game to make them an elite player? Quite honestly, it’s the shooting! Every youth desires to be the next LeBron “King James” James or the next Kobe “Black Mamba” Bryant.

The thrill of basketball for many athletes comes from the sound of the “swish” as a bucket is scored; the anticipation of accruing more points in this game than in the previous game. The key to acquiring the perfect shot comes from repetition. With practice, the shot becomes perfection.

The Shot Master is a new machine available by Prince William County / Manassas Boys and Girls Club in partnership with G Team Sports, Inc. With a rate of 20 shots per minute, this powerful tool allows a player to strategically hone in on their shooting technique, offering several different modes, and is a resource for all stages of the game.

Are You A Coach?

Who doesn’t like hands free coaching? The ability for a coach to actually show his or her team what skills they need to work on, without the burden of rebounding each players’ shot, makes coaching fun and interactive. A coaches’ job is made even easier if kids are able to work on their shooting skills prior to a school tryout or even after making the team. The Shot Master actually frees up coaches to do the coaching while the machine manages the drills.

Full court usage is part of the “team” booking package and allows a coach to utilize the shooting machine while also incorporating additional drills and playbook scenarios in their practice time.

Are You A Player?

The Shot Master allows players to step up their post-play presence or establish a premier perimeter shot. Whether working on individual performance or learning how to better perform as a team, this machine is designed to help in all areas.

Made for people of all ages from high school to college, from AAU to adult leagues, the Shot Master ahs the ability to improve the accuracy of effective shot taking for anyone who uses it. A priceless accessory to the machine is a shot counter; able to tell you how many shots were taken in a given time frame and how many were scored out of the quantity distributed; a feature that lesser shooting machines may not offer.

Are You A Parent?

Most parents often seek out a personal trainer to work with their child to help them be as much of an elite player as possible. G Team Sports provides the best of both worlds; personal training/conditioning and shooting drills with the Shot Master all in one.

At an rate of $25 per half hour and $50 per hour, it’s a convenient solution. Prices will adjust with multiple player bookings within the same time of implementation. An assessment from the instructor is also given to each parent following the athlete’s use of the equipment.

“If you are looking for the full shooting drill experience for your student athlete, I recommend that you try the basketball shooting machine used by G Team Sports. This unit is a mulch-dimensional unit and gives the athlete a real game experience. I’ve tried it myself and received a great workout. I am of the belief that you can’t expect your Tony eam to follow your instructions unless you have gone through the experience yourself.” said Potomac Senior High School Junior Varsity Head Coach Tony Washington

If you are interested in enhancing your skills as a player or coach, consider booking the Shot Master machine for your next workout; the only one of its caliber in the Greater Prince William area. For more information regarding pricing, scheduling and videos about the Shot Master, visit gteamsports.com. MANASSAS, Va. -- Community organizations and business leaders in Prince William County and Manassas are going the extra mile this summer to “Send a Kid to Camp.” For the next 10 days, seven prominent members of the community will embark on a quest to raise $50,000 to help give at-risk youth the opportunity to attend summer camp at one of three Boys and Girls Clubs branches in the area.

With the “10 Days to Summer Camp -- Send a Kid to Camp” fundraiser, raising funds for the campaign will be be done easily and electronically using Crowdrise, a web service which allows anyone to go online and make a donation to one of seven teams all playing for same goal -- to Send a Kid to Camp.

“Unplugged from the constant buzz of computers, television, video games, and cell phones, children find themselves at camp — making genuine connections with other children, rediscovering the fun in physical fitness, learning their own strengths, and finding their own voices,” said Boys and Girls Club Regional Director Glenn Vickers.
