QUANTICO, Va. — A wreath was laid today at Quantico National Cemetery to honor the first and only police officer in Manassas to die in the line of duty.

Sgt. John David Conner, III, was killed July 24, 1988, when he was called for a report of a man who was sitting on the front porch of a home armed with an AR-15 assault rifle shooting bullets into the air. When the man did not comply with Conner, gunfire was exchanged and Conner was shot three times and later died, according to his Officer Down Memorial page.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — The plan for a Manassas Battlefield Bypass is simple: get the traffic out of the national park and off of hallowed ground.

The highway was approved in 1988 but is still awaiting funding. If it’s built, it would alleviate congestion on a 2-lane portion of U.S. 29 through the Manassas National Battlefield Park, taking cars out of the civil war battleground and routing them instead along a new limited-access highway that would run from the intersection of Va. 234 bypass (Prince William Parkway) and Interstate 66, and then north along the existing Pageland Lane to Va. 234 (Sudley Road) in Catharpin, and then along what would be a new portion of road along Bull Run Post Office Road to reconnect drivers with U.S. 29 in Fairfax County.

DUMFRIES, Va. — Dumfries officials will vote on whether or not to install a Police School Resource Officer, or SRO, at Dumfries Elementary School.

Police Chief Rebecca Edwards on Tuesday asked town officials to place a memorandum of understanding with the town police department and Prince William County Public Schools on the consent agenda for the Aug. 7 meeting of the Dumfries Town Council. If it’s approved, Dumfries Elementary School will be the first and only elementary school in Prince William with a dedicated police officer offering protection to students and staff. The officer would be stationed at the school in time for the start of the upcoming school year.

MANASSAS, Va. — As the lights dimmed in the Old Town Pub, the room quieted. Over 50 sets of eyes watched the fast moving images. Teens and parents alike laughed at the antics of the trainees during the movie. Normally, trainees for the police and fire department are a little older, but over the last few weeks Manassas teens got a taste of what it’s like to work as emergency responders.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am,” said Fireman Kevin Shaffer. “These kids worked so hard. It was great to see kids from all walks of life getting to know each other and learning to work as a team.”

MANASSAS, Va. — Manassas police Officer Heather Munsterman is recovering after she was struck by a driver that police said was texting while driving.

“Officer Munsterman is suffering from fractures to her ankle and pelvic area, a dislocated shoulder and a concussion along with severe bruising across her entire body,” a press from Manassas City officials stated.
