STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — It’s a small store and deli with a lot to offer.

The “By the River Convenience Store and Cafe” is one of the few stops found along rural Brooke Road in Stafford County. It takes it’s name after its location, by the Potomac River and the Aquia Landing county park.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Screams echoed through the third floor hallway of the Prince William County Courthouse this morning as the Bailey family heard yet again, sentencing for Anthony Bailey would be postponed.

Dismayed, Bailey’s sister shouted “this is just a joke to you people and there is no justice for my brother; those men got away with murder” as she left the courtroom after yet another hearing in a string of seemingly endless court dates for brothers Richard Dale and Gerry Lee Sword.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Senator Mark Warner stopped by Northern Virginia Community College on Sunday to continue his push for national immigration reform.

During a special town hall meeting the college’s Woodbridge campus, Warner touted the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. The bill calls for stricter security along the southern U.S. border with Mexico, the implementation of eVerify system to check legal statuses of workers, for “blue card status” to be applied to those who have performed agriculture work, and for a merit-based immigration system for future immigrants that would cap the number of new migrants to the U.S. at 250,000.

DUMFRIES, Va. — Capt. Stanley “Pepper” Johnson on Saturday came to the place where he spent the past 18 years volunteering to serve his community.

It was there, at the Dumfries Volunteer Fire Department, about 100 fellow volunteers, their families and friends, gathered in the apparatus bay — where firetrucks that morning had been moved aside to make room for the crowd — to greet Pepper, most for one final time.

QUANTICO, Va. — On the weekend that marks the end of fighting in the Korean War, a life-sized war horse was unveiled at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

The war horse, “Sergeant Reckless,” was used by U.S. Marines fighting in the conflict to carry ammunition to the front lines of battle. The horse also carried wounded Marines from the front lines to safety — a task the horse did on her own even after being wounded.

Movie Review: The Way Way — Rated PG-13 — 3 stars out of 5

“The Way Way Back” is a place I am used to, so this movie was an easy choice. It’s a coming-of-age movie written and directed by the team of Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. These boys won a screenwriting Oscar for “The Descendants,” which they penned with Alexander Payne (Sideways). It follows that they would make this their directorial debut, as they are oddballs and that’s what this movie is about.
