Mom on the Run

I’m home, finally, after a long and busy day at work. I walk in the front door, pass through the hall, and enter the kitchen. On my right, at the entry to the family room, sit a laundry basket and a plastic bin overflowing with my daughter’s clothes. I close my eyes for a second, breathe, and walk on, ignoring the chaos.

DUMFRIES, Va. — Dumfries officials want U.S. 1 — the heavily used 4-lane highway that bisects the town — to run on the straight and narrow.

A plan, long on the books to be completed by 2030, would widen U.S. 1 to six lanes so the north and south portions of the highway would run on the same span on Fraley Blvd. where the U.S. 1 north traffic runs now. It also means Main Street in front of Town Hall would no longer carry U.S. 1 south traffic.

DALE CITY, Va. — Chunks of asphalt, rocks, mud, and other debris were left behind after a geyser erupted on Catalpa Court in Dale City.

A water main break Sunday night on the neighborhood street in the Catbrier Heights section near Dale City Volunteer Fire Department Station 10 on Dale Boulevard left at least 50 townhomes without water.

WOODBIRDGE, Va. — The memories of two small boys killed eight months ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut will continue to sail on the waters of the Potomac River.

A Catalina 22 sailboat bearing the name “Benjamin Chase,” named after Benjamin Wheeler, 6, and Chase Kowalski, 7, both killed in a mass shooting inside their elementary school in Newtown, Conn. that took the lives of 26 people in December, now sails the Potomac River.

A few months before I was born, my first cousin Ricky drowned while out on the Potomac River. He was a teenager who grew up on the river and knew how to swim, but the currents were too much for him and his friends to handle when their boat overturned.

As you can imagine, that tragedy significantly affected my family and how we viewed the importance of learning to swim. Everyone would benefit from learning the basics on how to swim – but who should teach them and should we implement it as a curriculum in our schools?

NORTH STAFFORD, Va. — Who smashed and grabbed cash from six businesses in North Stafford in the overnight hours Friday?

Stafford County authorities were alerted to the string of vandalism and thefts when an alarm was triggered inside a deli on Tech Parkway, just off Va. 610, about 3 a.m. Next to the deli, a hair salon was also hit.
