Successful blogger, wife, and mother of three Kristina Kotlus was faced with the fight of her life at just 28 years old.

In 2013 she learned she had a brain tumor. It sidelined the normally active web publisher who filled her days finding fun things to do for families in Prince William County on her website, pwcmoms.com, as well as managing her active family of three young children.

Willie J. Toney announced this past weekend that he will seek the mayor’s chair on the Dumfries Town Council.

Toney, a Democrat, currently serves as the town’s Vice Mayor and is looking to unseat the man he sits next to on the council dais, Republican Mayor Jerry Foreman, who is also seeking reelection.

This year’s Black History Month Celebration will honor several town residents, and mark the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

Here’s more about the annual celebration from Dumfries Director of Community Services Cydny Neville:

As I look ahead to our fourth year of covering Virginia’s Potomac Communities in Prince William, Stafford, and Manassas, you told us you wanted more local news for your neighborhood, delivered on an easy-to-read website that’s focused on where you live.

We heard you, and that’s why, today, I’d like to introduce you to our newest news sites – StaffordLocal.com and ManassasLocal.com. As you might guess, both sites will focus on the communities of their namesake, telling stories that are important to you, as well as showcasing community events and people.

One of the first rules of writing is to write about what you know. I confess, I do not follow that rule very often. If I did, I probably would have exhausted my writing skills three years ago, when I first began writing for Potomac Local. I tend to write more about what I feel and then attempt to add some factual, useful content and some helpful links so by the end of a column I know more than when I began. I hope it works that way for you when you read it, too.

Sometimes the “knowing” and the “feeling” are not compatible. Monday morning, I am going to Sentara hospital for a hip replacement. Almost everyone knows what that is, but I suspect not many of us actually know how that is done unless you are one of the 285,000 patients per year who undergo this surgery.

Good morning  – Brain Injury Services is looking a 12-month PALS friendship with a young Burke area man in his 20’s, loves any and all sports and would love a once or twice a month outing to enjoy sports and varied activities. Several more volunteers are needed to visit clients in specific neighborhoods. They have a client in Manassas who would like company to help with her crafting. They also have a gentleman who would love the company of a Columbia University alum as he is very proudly of the class of 1940. Please email Michelle at: [email protected] to learn more.

More drivers in Northern Virginia are being cited for texting while driving than any other portion of the state.
