I wound up my column last week by asking, “Who is going to step up to the plate?” I was talking about community maintenance; the art of tending neglected spaces. Let me share a few of the tools that volunteers find beneficial.

Often, the first step in community maintenance is simply determining who owns the property. Prince William County provides the County Mapper connecting you to lots of other data, too, like tax information, zoning, overlay districts and much more.

It’s a sales tax-free weekend across Virginia.

Retailers will not charge you sales tax on school supplies and clothing between today and Sunday night. The idea is to help parents get their children ready to back to school while spurring spending in area stores.

August means the end of summer and the start of school is right around the corner. While you might feel you need to cram each weekend full of school supply shopping, there are still other fun, educational opportunities to be had.

Take your kids and travel back to the Civil War, hike through historic trails while looking for wildlife, or spend a day seeing American history in the eyes of a Marine. Educational opportunities are endless with this list of both fun and informative places to visit before the school doors open

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — With a golden shovel and the tossing of dirt, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe broke ground for a new Virginia Railway Express station in Woodbridge.

The $14 million passenger depot will be on the commuter railroad’s Fredericksburg line, and will be built in the developing Potomac Shores neighborhood, a master-planned community already getting attention after it opened its Jack Niclaus-designed golf course in June.

MANASSAS, Va. — The Dixie Power Trio is a four-piece group dedicated to the music and sounds of Louisiana.  Based in Fredericksburg VA, the group has toured extensively throughout the United States in support of their seven independently produced recordings.

In a typical set the Dixie Power Trio will play a gumbo of different styles including zydeco, Cajun, New Orleans jazz, funk, street parade, and rock.  The songs are a mix of Louisiana-flavored originals and covers—all with a unique, happy-go-lucky attitude.  The band’s music has been featured on NPR’s “All Thing’s Considered” and on several WB television shows.  Over the past few years the Dixie Power Trio has shared the concert stage with many Louisiana music luminaries including Wynton Marsalis, the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Terrence Simien, Chubby Carrier, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Olympia Brass Band, and Beausoleil.
