STAFFORD — Residents are speaking out after, a transgender student at Stafford Middle School was barred from using both boys and girls locker rooms during a lockdown drill in which a child was forced to sit in the bleachers alone.

It happened last week during a drill, which is common within Stafford County Public Schools. Two drills have taken place already this school year.


MANASSAS — The center of western Prince William County could soon become Downtown Manassas, as far as OmniRide is concerned.

The local bus service that recently changed its name from PRTC is eyeing more changes in the Manassas area and proposes relocating the central transfer point in the western portion of the county from Manassas Mall to the corner West Courthouse Road and Mosby Street, near the county’s courthouse.


STAFFORD — Come spring, county leaders will modify the budget process and set the Merchant’s Capital Tax rate, similar to the way the Board of Supervisors sets its Real Estate tax rate.  

Supervisors on Oct. 2 approved an ordinance to provide a separate classification of certain Merchants Capital Tax for wholesalers, presented by Stafford Economic Development Director John Holden.


STAFFORD — Stafford County Tourism is sponsoring a three-race series between September and December.

Runners wanting to participate can still sign up for the Halloween 5K and Monster Mile on October 27 and the Frosty 5K and Reindeer Run on December 15.


MANASSAS — The City of Manassas was awarded a Governor’s Technology Award for a new app that streamlines maintenance reports at Manassas Regional Airport.

The app, Regional Airport Inspection, was designed by Margaret Montgomery and Richard Allabaugh and uses geographic information system (GIS) mapping technology to quickly locate and share areas in need of maintenance or attention.


STAFFORD — It was at the end of the school day, and teachers and staff across Stafford County had to race to make sure all students were safe during a tornado warning.

The weather event brought an unusual end to the school day on Monday, Sept. 17. It which caused significant delays in getting elementary school students home on time.

WOODBRIDGE — Federal and state officials are preparing for a future full of autonomous vehicles.

In the skies, “we’ve got drones delivering food during football games in San Fransisco, and drones delivering much-needed blood to others,” said Anthony Biddell, of the U.S Department of Transportation Department.


MANASSAS — Leaders put the brakes on a proposed redevelopment study for 20 acres of land south of Downtown Manassas.

Councilman Mark Aveni on Thursday told the city’s land use committee that redeveloping the land behind the Manassas Museum, between Buckner Road to Prince William Street, into a mixed historical district with urban single-family homes “could be the most significant development in Manassas since the railroad came through.”


PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — Heavy rain didn’t stop parents, teachers, and students from attending a Prince William County School Board Chair Candidates Debate on Thursday.

Gainesville District School Board member Alyson Satterwhite sat next to the appointed Interim School Board Chairman At-large Dr. Babur Lateef inside Howsmon Hall at the Northern Virginia Community College Manassas Campus.
